Question about 2001 Ford Escort ZX2

1 Answer

I have a 1999, Ford Escort zx2, was running in the driveway, then stopped and would not start. I am getting no fire and no fuel pressure. Removed the fuel pump and checked it is fine. Relay in trunk is reset. Tech in the car remains still when turning over, don' t know what would cause, no fire and no fuel. Crank position sensor, or cam sensor, will the CCRM cause both of these problems, or are they separate?

Yes, the motor turns over, I think I might of find my problem from reading other listings. My brother in law removed the battery, and there is a black box with a couple of wire going to it, with the grounds for relay fuel pump, that goes on the - terminal. This is not hooked up, will this stop the car from firing.

I am being told that this black box next to the Negative Terminal is the grounds for PCM, Fuel pump relays, so I will try to hook that up tomorrow and see if that fixes the problem with no fire and no fuel.

Yes, I will give you a good rating and you were helpful, the car is running fine started after hooking the Negative ground, back up. Thank you for your time.

Hey there Jack! Does the engine try to turn over when you turn the key? Are there any sounds that you hear or any odd smells?

It could be a few things but i will list a couple things that i think it could be.

One or both of these may need to be replaced.

  1. EFI main relay
  2. Circuit opening relay
Both of these relays control the fuel regulation system and the fuel injection/ Ignition system.

Let me know of any other sysmptoms you notice other than the fact it wont start.

Sorry for the delay i was feeding my son. Yes! I do believe that that is the problem. That sounds like the ground for the powertrain control module and if that isnt hooked up it will not start.

    Sorry for the delay.

Even though you found the solution on your own would you be willing to make my solution as helpful and give it a good rating? I am still new to this site and would really appreciate it.

Thank you so much and have a great day!

p.s. I am going to bed now so if you comment back i may not get it untill tomorrow. If that happens i may loose $2 because if i dont answer back in less than 4 hours it locks me out of the question :(

No problem, If you ever have any other problems i think you can seach for me in here. I am not sure though i am still new to this site. Do you know how to rate and mark as solved? I only ask because for many people this is their first time on here. lol I have about 6-7 that I have solved with the correct answer and they never answer back or come back on to this site. Its amazing because i think some of them have paid upwards of $20 to ask a premium expert.

Thank you for the rating. I am glad i could help, even if it was a little :)

I have a 1999 ford escort zx2 that has trouble starting(long crank time). But after it starts once, it will start real easy the second time. Any ideas?

could be a fuel pressure problem ( pressure regulator faulty) or an electronic problem
best run the fault codes first to get closer to the problem area

1999 ford escort zx2 cranks but won't start

As with any no-start issue, you will need to figure out if you have a problem with fuel pressure to the injectors, or spark to the plugs.
I would also check the computer for trouble codes.
Let me know what you find out.

I have an escort zx2-2001 engine that it takes me two tries to start especially when on hills. When it does start there is alot of raw fuel smell emiited from the exhaust. Ive changed the fuel filter,...

If you're smelling unburnt gasoline, then it sounds like you're not getting fire to all cylinders. Not sure if your car has coil paks or distributor, but which ever it has, I would check to make sure all cylinders are firing. You can do this by starting the engine and pulling the wires off the coil paks/distributor one at a time. Listen and watch for any change or variation in the running of the motor. If it trys to die out then that plug is getting fire. If nothing changes in the way the motor runs, then it's a good possibility that that cylinder isn't firing. Hope this helps.

Instructions for replacing fuel pump in a 2001 ford Escort ZX2

Remove the rear seat, remove the 4 screws holding the metal cover, and you'll see the top of the fuel tank. The pump module is held in place by a locking ring that can be removed by use of a brass punch and hammer. If the ring is rusted, it'll get damaged during removal and will need replaced. You can get a new ring from Ford. Once the ring is removed, you can pull the pump module out. Remove the small screws from the top of the module and you can pull the top off of the basket to gain access to the fuel pump. Replace the pump and get new fuel pump strainers.

I have a 1999 ZX2 ford escort that starts, but dies in seconds

It is was a gas filter problem blocking gas flowing from the pump. What happening was that when it was trying to **** the last drop of gas into the engine it really disturbed dirts inside the fuel filter and made it clogged at fine mesh. And also make sure give sometime for gas delivered into the fuel line it since it was empty when you change the fuel filter. It means you have to keep starting for a while so gas can go up to the fuel distributor then injectors.
