How to remove and replace the ignition switch in a 1976 chevy silverado 3/4 ton pickup? Could you please include a diagram?

Remove the horn button, nut the pull the wheel off with a puller.Remove the lock plate retaining spring using a Lock plate press. Remove the directional switch screws (3).. Lift that switch out of the way to remove the ignition lock screww
Pull out ign Lock Cylinder

Reverse this procedure to install

Disconnect the small purple wire at the starter and see if that stops it. If not, replace the starter. If it does you will have to test the rest of the starter circuit.

Need the wiring diagram for the steering column on a 1999 chevy silverado half ton pickup. Installed a new column everything works except it won't stay running.


I am looking at a 2001 Chevy Silverado and the key ignition looks like it has been broken and when you take the key out the buzzered stays on

need a special tool to remove the locking plate behind steering wheel then pull turn signal switch back a little then remove screw that keeps lock cylinder in place

I am trying to remove the ignition switch from a 1976 Chevy PU


This plate is the steering lock plate.It has a lock ring on the shaft but is under very heavy spring pressure which must be compressed in order to remove and re-install. There is a special tool that compresses this spring.It mounts on the steering shaft threads and pushes on the plate.It is quite difficult without but can be done with two persons as one presses and the other removes the lock ring...good luck

1. Close all vehicle doors.

2. Insert the key into the ignition.
3. Hold down the power UNLOCK button on the driver’s door panel-continue to hold
down until instructed to release in step 9.

4. Perform steps 5 through 8 in fairly rapid succession.
5. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position (as far as you can go without starting the
engine).

6. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
7. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
8. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
9. Release the power unlock button on the door panel. The vehicle will lock and unlock
the doors automatically.

10. Hold down the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the transmitter simultaneously until
the door locks and unlocks.
This step may take up to 30 seconds.

11. Repeat step 10 NOW for each additional transmitter (including any existing
transmitters).

12. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position in order to exit the transmitter programming
mode.
