Question about 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Truck won't shut off until I unplug my tent trailer? Just pick up new trailer and had a 7 pin connector added to my truck along with a brake controller

It sounds like someone messed up to me! Apparently, the brake controller got wired into an ignition circuit that it should not have gotten wired to. When accessories are added to a vehicle, it is extremely important that the vehicle wiring diagrams are used so that you know EXACTLY what you are tying into. Some of the Chevy trucks that are sold with trailer towing packages already have the wiring for brake controllers under the dash. This makes installation easy and is already tied into the correct things.

The 7 oin connector was wired wrong. sounds like it was somehow wired in to keep the ignition system hot.

suggest downloading the trailer pin standard for whatever number of pins your trailer plug has and tracing the wiring from the colors . The standard will tell you what color goes to what light and what pin number it should be on . Also 5 pin and 7 pin are different . You can plug a 5 pin into a 7 pin but the wiring is different .

Also check the trailer socket is grounded at the car body properly. As this can cause lots of weird symptoms.

Hi, this may true if you connected the trailer brake to the connector on the factory wiring harness. There are several fuses that are needed for trailer towing. In the box by the battery, fuses 13, 25, 27, 53, and 54 are needed. You will need a relay in relay slot 19 for the trailer running lights, a relay in relay slot 20 to charge the trailer emergency battery; and, if your trailer has backup lights (6 or 7 wire connector), you will also need a relay in the relay slot 15. If you did not use the factory connector for your trailer brake controller, check to make sure you have connected the controller to an appropriate power source in the truck. Yes, you need the other wires to provide the trailer with battery voltage. If the trailer has trailer brakes, you should have an RV mechanic wire up the connector so the brakes on the trailer operate from the Ford.

Were do you hook up the two wires under the hood for trailer brakes on a 2000 silverado


Sometime around 2000, GM started putting trailering pre-wire harnesses in the vehicle. Your truck may have this harness built in and would greatly simplify brake controller installation. Look under the glovebox and see if there is a wire harness tied off. There will be four wires in this harness, which should be run over to the steering column to use it. Most trailer brake controllers are compatible with this harness.
The four wires in the harness are: Red, 12vdc; black, ground; blue or purple, brake pedal; and brown or white, trailer brake wire to seven pin, four pin, or five pin connector at trailer hitch, if your truck came from the factory with a trailer hitch.
If you are adding the hitch and do not have the four wire harness, the under hood wires from your brake controller are Red, connect to one of the studs under the distribution box cover (the distribution box is on the driver's side against the firewall. Underneath the cover are two large threaded studs which are hot from the battery all the time); and the other wire from your brake controller would have to be run the length of the truck along the frame, tied off in several places, to the trailer hitch connector on the bumper. Follow the directions that came with trailer hitch wiring connector to connect this wire to the proper pin in the connector.

Trailer brakes


Take a 12 volt test light... the kind that has a spring loaded clip to hold the probe into the wire, and insert it into the wire just before the trailer plug, vehicle side. (Blue I think) If there is a connection, the brake should see it and you should have an indicator light. When you activate the brake the test light should lite up. If not, move up to the brake actuator and test the blue wire. If there is nothing at the actuator, check the black wire. It is power to the controller. If no power there, check fuses again. If it does pick it up at the plug, connect the trailer and test the trailer itself. First ground to the trailer and then to the truck. Most problems are ground wire related. Then move to the axle and test it there. For the brakes to work, and even show on the indicator, there has to be a ground and power to the brakes themselves. There are 2 wires to each brake... a ground and a power. Test across both wires to make sure you have power and ground. You can also hook another trailer to your truck or another truck to your trailer. Lights can work through trailer ball ground. Brakes can't. leave the trailer unhooked from the trailer and hook the wiring up and test the lights. That usually will indicate a good or faulty ground. No trailer right turn signal or brake light

The pinouts for a 7-way plug are as follows:
Seven wire Trailer plugs:

Horse, stock or utility trailers:

White = Ground - 1
Blue = Electric Brakes - 2
Brown = Tail and clearance lights - 3
Black = Battery, aux power - 4
Yellow = Left turn/Brake - 5
Green = Right turn Brake - 6
Orange or Purple (not both) = Auxilliary or Reverse - 7

Recreational Vehicle:
White = Ground - 1
Blue = Electric Brakes - 2
Green = Tail and clearance lights - 3
Black = Battery, aux power - 4
Red = Left turn/Brake - 5
Brown = Right turn Brake - 6
Yellow = Auxilliary or Reverse - 7

In both cases 4 is battery and 7 is reverse, aux or not used.

Double check your wiring using these lists as a reference.

Check the trailer connector for loose or corroded wires that come into the back of it. If the light works on the truck then you have problems with the trailer harness.

If you have amber signal lights & red brake lights, it's 2 separate circuits. You'll need to buy a small converter that you wire into harness to correct that. Not expensive, try autoparts store or RV/trailer sales, should have them.

Brake controller not communicating w/ 7 pin connector


what type controller did you install? Is this a camper or trailer? Is the controller hydraulic plumbed into master cylyder? Important to know how to adjust rheostat for sensitivity. If set at minimum the system is basically on the edge of not sending any signal to towed unit. The intructions should explain how to make this adjustment. If set too sensitive trailer brakes will lock up before the tow vehcle starts to brake. Controller should be set so trailer starts braking just befor the tow vehcle. If not the trailer will tax the tow vehicle brakes by pushing. Its set right when you feel the combination stretching out. trailer first then tow vehcle. Good luck and remember, if truck brakes first and too hard you risk a jacknife. All light voltages should be system voltage. Brake voltage is variable depending on setting on controller. Understand your breakaway brakes and how they work. breakaway breaks require an auxillary battery. Again, good luck and you know where to find me if I can be of anymore help.

4pin blue modular plug under dash for brake controller to plug in


You should be able to access the Prodigy Instructions ie Wiring Diagram At google. Maybe an install video on You Tube. Make sure everything you do is properly fused. Any thing as far as color codes will need to be Prodigy specific. Prodigy may have a 1-800 Tech line. They should be able to E-mail you a PDF file.
