How hard is it to change an ignition switch

Not that hard if you are mechanically inclined. The flat rate book time is .8 of an hour. You need to remove the steering wheel bezel covers and the switch is held in place by clips.

Hi there. my friend is stuck on the road and she can put the key into the ignition but cant turn it, the steering wheel is locked. she has tried everything... whats goin on? 2000 ford focus

Very common issue for this model. She needs to buy a buildable ignition from the dealer and get the key code with her vin # so she can make it match her anti theft key, then the ignition lock cylinder needs to be drilled out to remove it.

01 malibu ignition switch will not turn/ are no details damn key will not turn

The lock tumblers inside the key lock cylinder have jamb up causing the key not to turn. Since the tumblers are made of brass they are no longer usable. As a retired locksmith I can tell you this is fairly a simple repair. The key cylinder is mounted on the dash which is the easiest removal on any car made after 1967. Go to any General Motors dealer and get a replacement part. The dash plate trim will need to come off to gain access to remove the lock

How do you change the ignition barrel? the key doesn't turn and i was told the tumblers inside broke i took off the cover to get at it.

On most Fords, you must insert the key and turn to run position then push a little pin underneath the ign lock cyl. However if you cant turn the key at all, you have no choice but to drill out the lock cyl. Becareful because you dont want to go too far. There is a hardened piece at the end where the key goes in, once that is gone the cyl drills out nicely. When the hole is big enough the tumblers will fall out and you can remove the lock cyl.

2000 focus intermitently not starting while relays "chatter" dashlights and beeper fade in and out replaced ignition switch and tumbler/key set, acts like a bad connection.

Remove battery cables and clean thoroughly,if still have problem remove connectors from fuse blocks and inspect for burned terminal.

My key will not turn in my 2000 ford focus has anyone had this problem and not had to replace ignition

Will the key go in and out of the ignition? If you can take the key from the ignition, I would use WD40 and lubricate the ignition lock until it is almost overly lubricated and take the key and push it in the lock and tap the end of the key into the lock with a hammer (remember, I said TAP). These things might get your car ignition to work long enough to get your car ignition into the ON position. at that point removal of the ignition cylinder is very easy. if you can't get the key to turn go to this page to see about drilling out the lock so it will turn.

Go to this website and get in contact with Tousley Ford. They have great prices on ford parts if you are in the USA.

I just changed out the ignition cylinder in my 2002 Focus and it was a five minute job because I could get the old cylinder in the ON position and didn't have to drill it out. and Tousley ford did me great on the price!
Good luck.

It's possible the tumblers have fallen in your ignition. I had a similar incident with a Focus I owned. Everything locked and I couldn't get the key to turn at all. They had to tow the car to the dealership and replace the tumblers.

Ignition tumbler key

Place key into ignition, use a paper clip and press the tiny hole on the switch. Turn the key back towards ACC position and pull the cylinder right out. Reverse procedure to install.
