I have confirmed the fill plug is located on the Differential cover (rear facing) Closer to the left about half way up. Although Summit after market Differential covers has a drain plug the OEM cover does not. You will need to suction the old fluid out then add the new fluid. From what I can see the fill plug is 13mm. Capacity is .7L. Used Volvo Rear Axle Fluid (API GL-5 Low friction part #1161329). Also I read that it requires one aluminum crush washer (same size as engine oil drain plug). I don't know about reusing the origional.

Hi there,
Save hours of searching online or wasting money on unnecessary repairs by talking to a 6YA Expert who can help you resolve this issue over the phone in a minute or two.

Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.

The awd does not engage the back wheels on the 04 xc90 Volvo how ever the "w" does appear on dash

There are quite a few things that can cause this. It should be as simple as a software upgrade to the differential electronic module or as expensive as an angle gear.

I don't know of a safe way to check if the driveshaft is turning without raising the car off the ground, but that's where you'll need to start.

If the driveshaft turns but the rear wheels are not engaging then the codes will need to be pulled and the system diagnosed.

If the driveshaft does not turn then the angle gear or the collar that connects the transmission to the angle gear is stripped

The only thing I could tell you that might actually help right now is... Remove the battery cover in the rear of the vehicle, it's under the load floor. Disconnect the battery cables and leave them off for two minutes. Reconnect them and drive the car. If the AWD engages then a software upgrade may fix it, or there's an intermittent electrical fault in the sensor system.
Volvo has a complimentary (free to the customer) software upgrade available for all cars sine 2001. Some dealers do it, some not so much. Ask for it, most of the software packages I've seen include the updates to the differential electronic module (DEM) if they have anything available anyway.
Hope this helps and good luck.

Thinking of buying a pre owned Volvo XC90 probably 05 or 06. Anything I should know? Wld be as second car so I could split mileage between Honda CR-V and this thanks

This is a perfect idea. Just be sure to do an oil change when due and be careful the kind of fuel you put in.

A nice car.

Volvo xc90 2004 buzzing in steering wheel, clunck noise under car

that sounds like you are low on power steering fluid ... when the level gets low then the pump starts to ingest air and that produces a buzzing sound when you turn the wheel .....i would add or change the fluid and check for leaks and mechanical loosness in the under car linkages can have that checked at your next oil change .
