I took thin piece of carpet in trunk away from tail light and can see bulb. But the bulb holder is different than older Ford cars I have had and I do not want to break bulb holder getting it out. Can you tell me what to do? I have lost my owner's manual. Thanks

Open the trunk and twist the retaining wing nuts off the studs holding the carpeted trim cover in place on the back side of the tail lamps.
Pull the carpeted trim cover out of the way and pry the plastic caps out of the holes with the screwdriver tip.
Unbolt the nuts holding the tail-lamp assembly in place using the socket set.
Pull the tail lamp assembly away from the body of the Stratus. Grab the socket for the bulb in question and twist it counterclockwise to remove it. Pull the old bulb out by hand and insert the replacement bulb. Reinstall the socket in reverse of removal.
Push the tail lamp assembly back into position and tighten the nuts back down onto the retaining studs using the socket set. Pop the plastic caps back into the holes, pull the carpeted trim cover back into position and reinstall the plastic wing nuts. Close the trunk.

You may have a fried fuse. Look in your owners manual to find out which fuse it is in the fuse box diagram. If that is the problem make sure to use the same amperage fuse to replace the burned one with. I fried fuse is usually a sign that you have a short somewhere. But they can also fry for other reasons such as excess moisture somewhere. Sometimes they just burn from age and fatigue. It may solve it to just replace the fuse, but if there really is a short, the new fuse will fry too.
I don't have a ford 500, but I hope this helps. Most newer cars are simmilar.
Pull the trunk carpet behind the tail light back so you can access the nuts holding the lense in place. Remove the nuts and pull the tail light
assembly out. Remove the lamp holder by pressing in the lock tab and turning the holder counter clockwise. The lamp should be a plug in type.
Most modern cars, the bulbs are accessible through the trunk after removing the carpeted panels. If you are a little mechanical you should see whether there is a "trap" door or just twist the bulb holder. Pretty simple usually, good luck.
Inside the trunk, under the carpet behind the tail lights will be a whole bunch of small plastic nuts, running from one side of the car to the other. Take all of these plastic nuts off, and the whole tail light assembly will come off in one large piece. Find the bulb you need to replace, and reassemble
1999 Tercel rear light bulb replacement. Snap off 2 black caps to pull back carpet. Remove 2 screws on outside of trunk at the edge of trunk lid. The light fixture will loosen up. Sqeeze the tongs on the square white plastic plug on the inside and push plug through hole. You may have to give the light fixture a tug. Turn bulb holder and pull it out. Pull out bulb and put in new one.
open the trunk remove the scuff plate that is located on the back part of the trunk closest to you. then pull the carpet back on the side that you are trying to get to and remove the three or four nuts holding the light assembley in. pull the assembley away from the body then disconnect the bulbs from the assembley. thay should just turn and come out socket and all.
