It does sound like one or more of your big end bearings has failed. Your valve clearances are more of a light sounding rattle, and don't usually give trouble unless the engine has become sludged. Camrys can suffer sludging if oil changes are neglected.

To get some idea what is wrong, have a mechanic remove the oil pressure sensor and insert an oil pressure gauge. You should see (when hot) about 10 psi per 1000 RPM or so. If this is down, you have bottom end bearing trouble.

What could be causing rattling under the hood when sitting still?

Many things can cause your problem but the most common is either a heat shield or a retaining clip that has come loose. My recommendation is to block your wheels so that your vehicle can't roll forward, open your hood, start your vehicle, HOLD YOUR FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, have an assistant listen to see if they can locate the noise. If the noise is gone with the hood open then look for any shiny spots on the underside of the hood.

My car is making an awful groaning grinding noise noise when it starts. The noise stops after it starts. Put my foot on the brake it starts again. put thr car in reverse no problem put it in,drive it...

It's your exhaust mounts or broken exhaust bolts. It does it in drive st idle n under load because the motor is sitting in rubber mounts made to dampen vibration. Therefore the motor tilts to the left in reverse pulling the exhaust away from your under carraige, and to the right in drive causing the loose exhaust to vibrate against something. Check your heat shields also. They fall apart n do the same noise. Piece of cake.

Your car can start if the alternator is making noise. It could be the bearings going out in the alternator, It could be the tension pulley for your belt. It could be a valve rattling but the sound could make you think it's coming from a different place. Sounds under a hood may sound like it's here, but it could be coming from there. Good Luck.

Rattling from under the hood

I would start by splitting up the drive train to determine if it is accessory, engine or transmission related.
There are a number of things that can cause a problem like this.
1) Is the noise louder in drive or reverse.
2) I would start with heat-shields because of your "clank" description. Exhaust manifold, catalytic converter shields and any other you can find under hood or under body.
3) If all is good, check engine and transmission mounts. Make certain none have collapsed, cracked or broken.
4) If all good, remove all accessory drive belts and start engine to see if noise goes away.
That's a lot to start with, so let me know what you find and we will go from there.
Regards.

Noise under hood like rattling sound

Try checking the heat shields on the exhaust pipe up front under the car. Alot of times they will loosen up, and begin to rattle. You can ither remove them, or try to clamp them.
Hope this helps!
