I took off the alternator and the battery because my chargeing light stays on. Had them both tested and was told that there is a short in my charging system. How can that be diagnosed. Both the battery and the alternator where both bad. 1989 Toyota Camry

Rate it as top notch. I think I need to keep my car in this day and age of tight money and all that

I took the alternator and battery both to an auto parts store and had then tested. Turns out that the alternator was bad. I had installed that myself about a year or so ago. All the signs pointed to it, but just wanted to be sure. Thanks for your help again.

Well the charging system is simply a wire from the alternator to the battery .. the only short there could possibly be is that wire and to fix is to replace the wire (thats is the positive wire) the negative is the car body as a ground so that cant cause a short.
A bad alternator can damage a battery what was your charging voltage ?? once its between 13.5 to 14.2 you should have been fine. The charge light eighter meant a f ailing battery or alternator that was lower than 13.5 (which would not damage the battery) or highter than 14.2 (which would kill the battery). It could also be (very rare though) if you have an external regulator or rectifier (which most modern cars dont)..
anyway considering both alternator and battery failed (replace alternator . battery and wire from alternator to battery and you should be fine.)

No problem anytime... Btw just thought you should know if you plan on using back that same battery and its a sealed maintenance free battery ,, dont expect your full life cycle from it. To make it last longer get it trickle charged before using it back, A local mechanic or autozone can do this for you. Tell them u need the same type of charge as they would a deep cycle marine battery. The trickle charge. Do not fast charge it. You can let it charge in your car but it will never charge fully,

When not running the engine for a week, the battery dies. When I jump start it, engine will start cranking very slow and pickup speed before it starts running.

it seems like the battery is going. clean battery terminals, also the grounding to the body (engine block, transmission, etc.) all should be shiny cleaned. suggest you go to autozone (or other auto parts) for a free battery & alternator tests.

Battery ok alt new battery light stays on

The light means the alternator is not charging the battery. Once the charging circuit is completed, the warning light looses its ground connection.
You may need to double check the circuit going from the alternator to the battery, or the warning light circuit going to the alternator as it could be shorted to ground.

was the alternator bench tested? or tested on the car? if the alternator tests good off the car and the wiring has been tested, the ground may be loose or disconnected.

Car wont stay running

Being tested without a load on it can make a difference. If the battery is not putting out 12 volts it will make things crazy. Also the alternator could be charging at times and sometimes not. Alt. Should have 12.9 at least. Check serpentine belt, could be slipping therfore it cant charge.

Battery not staying charged

The way I used to check alternator is while car is running I would take the negative cable off the battery if the car dies then the alternator is not putting out enough. The battery is used to crank the car. When the car is running the alternator provides voltage to run the car and charge the battery back up. Now day some car have some security which if the car dies when you take the cable off the anti theft will not let radio work till you put a code in it.
If not your battery or alternator it may be something draining your battery while it is off. If you have a light in the trunk, under hood under dash which may be staying on. I had a portable spot light which had a charger wired into my truck. I found the battery was bad in the light and the charger was charging 24 /7 and running my battery down.

We replaced the alternator and the battery and the belt tensioner but charging system light still stays on

There are two things that generally cause a battery warning after an alternator replacement. The most common is a loose connection either with the control plug (aka “relay” plug-in), charging line connection, or the ground. The other is a blown fuse or defective connector or relay, which could have been broken or shorted when the alternator was installed or on the first start-up after its installation.
You can check that the alternator is supplying enough power by starting the car and disconnecting the battery. If the car dies, the alternator isn't working properly (or a wiring/relay/fuse issue).

Toyota starlet alternator charge relay

I am having similar problems with my 1983 fuel injected starlet. I have burnt through a replacement alternator, and bought a new battery(not to mention tons of other mechanical work trying to restore the car). The pros are telling me it could be the charge light relay, which is hard to find, but if the plug on the alternator with the "L" marking for light is supposed to have less than 12 volts running through it, while the other two prongs are supposed to have full charge. On my car the "L" charge light prong has no voltage going to it, while tho others are at 12 volts. I did the testing with a FULLY CHARGED battery, an undercharged battery can also short out the alternator, I am told. Trying to learn what to do, still no luck I am afraid to install the new alternator and it tested good.

Batterie is not charging we took the batterie to check they told us is good

Hi, have you checked the alternator? Voltage should be at least 14 volts at battery with engine running. If not, or you don't have a voltmeter, remove the alternator and take to parts store for testing.
Thanks for using FixYa.

Charge problem

Sounds like the alternator/voltage regulator. Take the car to an autoparts store and have them test the alternator output. Most parts stores will test the alternator for free. There is a definite charging problem if it has killed two batteries. Sorry for your trouble and I hope this helped. Best wishes.
