My 1996 Ford explore xlt and my driver side window will not go up or down on its own. I can force it to roll down and pull/push it up with my hand. When I push the button to roll it up I can hear the motor going but I think the gears if u will (not to sure) is stripped. When I take the door panel off everything is behind metal and can't easily get to it. How would I go about removing the motor and/or gears to inspect it?

You can probably force it up using both hands on opposite sides if you can get it to start up. You may have to reopen the door panel to get it started.
the window transmission is busted... someone tried to roll the window down while frozen shut by ice... or roll up with something in the way maybe? replace the window motor/transmission (one single unit).
if it was running slow then yes i would say the motor died. to replace you have to take the door panel off not too hard of a job if you have some mechanical abilties. i would look online for the part you can usually get it a lot cheaper than local auto stores
remove the door handle screw covers at the pull handle and hand grip, remove pull out window switch and chack for screws underneath, once all srews are removed about 3-6 of them, pry bottom of panel away from door with a putty knife there are a dozen or so plastic clips holding it from behind they just pop out, then the top of the panel is hanging on the edge of the window lip
could be just a bad switch drivers switch or passengers switch test or replace both switches
if switch test good than the window motor is probably bad has enough power to bring window down but not up and for that u will need to take of door panel
Start by checingthe swich. If the motor makes noise when trying to pull the window up The swich maybe OK. The means that some thing is wrong w/ the rails on wich the Glass travels .You may have to take the door apart to see were the optruction is.
