Question about Volkswagen Golf

Golf 1.4 my epc(orange) light has come on the immobiliser is the fault. where do i start to check for the fault? 17978 code?

Normally the car would not start or would die down after several seconds or minutes with this error. If this is not happening, it may just be a problem with the dash.
If the engine does not start or die down on you may may try a few simple steps for isolating the issue or trace the wiring if needed.
First try both keys (I would assume that you still have both of them). This is to test if its the key with the faulty chip is causing it. If it is the key you may need to have it replaced or the system reprogrammed.
If it was just a error or fluke form the system or an immobilizer starting to die down put the key in the ON position but do not start it. Leave it as is for more than 15mins to 20mins then start it. Take note that if this works, the issue may occur again as the problem is a sign that something is giving way due to wear.
If you do troubleshooting you may want to check the wring specifically the W wire or the green wire connected at the instrument panel at pin 5. You may want to check for loose connections. Its starts from the said green wire to the orange wire at the plenum to pin 18 of the ECM.
Other than that it may be the immobilizer that is faulty.

My 2000 vw golf has epc light on and also drained the battery


Hi there:
EPC stands for Electronic Power Control. this means that your vehicle has a fly-bywire system, whish means that there's No accelerator cable and the throtle body is controled by the ECM (Engine Control Module).



If your EPC light comes on there will be a fault code stored in the ECM, any generic scan tool will give a Pxxx code, note it and send us for other details.

Hi . i have a 2001 VW golf 1.4 16 valve AXP engine code . the problem is the car will start and run for about 30 minutes or so and then for no apparrent reason just cut out . EPC warning light comes on ....


change the pedal sensors if fitted ,not sure it has them though i cannot remember everything ,nothing in my alldata book about a fault with this particular model .but this is a common sort of problem with vehicles with pedal sensors

The car wont start sometimes and sometimes it will. The engine doesn't even turn over but it's not a battery problem because we had that checked. What could it be?


Dear Madam or Sir,

this is a well known problem with the immobilizer system.

See the following official tech bulletin :

Affected vehicles:
All models with Bosch RB8 instrument panel up to 2002 MY.


Problem:

Engine starts and cuts out immediately.

Trouble code stored: 17978 (P1570) - engine control module (ECM), immobilizer active.

Trouble code stored: 18058 (P1650) - CAN data bus, instrumentation - no signal.


Cause
Immobilizer fault.
System arms when ignition switched ON.

Remedy:
Access fault memory. If trouble codes present fit modified instrument panel (incorporating immobilizer control module).

Note: Immobilizer can only be programmed using diagnostic equipment.

First one is 17978 -ECM blocked By Immobiliser. there is something wrong with car key or imobiliser. try with second key. If problem presist, go to diler on diagnostic tool. all the rest are for glow plugs. change them.

EPC: Electronic Power Control

The ME7 engine management system uses electronic controls to operate the throttle valve rather than the usual braided cable. Pedal resistance and operation matches cable designs so that the operator is unlikely to differentiate. In an event of a failure with either one of the accelerator pedal position sensor (G79 or G185), the other sensor signal would be used in a limited capacity with functions such as cruise control deactivated. If both sensors malfunction, the ECM will limit engine speed to proximately 1200 rpm.

Now as to your question regarding error codes (DTC, SAE/VAG fault codes), as VW scan tool or similar needs to be hooked up to your vehicle in order to read which ones are stored in the ECU. This codes will tell you which area of the system came from and what problem they are related to. Only with a scanner makes all this possible, without it, it would be an expensive guessing game besides being very unreliable.

EPC- Electronic Powertrain Control. The computer has detected a fault code. Could be very minor, or maybe not...Take it to a shop to have them pull the codes

Epc inidcator with other orange light


Difficult to say how much but sounds like fuel issue, most likely o2 sensor fault or catalyst both relatively expensive but the catalst more so, o2 sensors fairly common on these and would guess approx £180 .whch i guess equates to around. $320 ?? supplied and fitted.
