Question about 1998 Audi A6

OBD test - Emissions test

I have a 1998 Audi A6 that just failed the IL emissions inspection test. The trouble code is PO411 - Secondary Air Injection System Incorrect Mow Detected. The check engine light is on, but seems to stay on constantly despite repeated trips to dealer.

Can someone educate me about this problem before I go to dealership to get fixed so I know what to expect. Any estimate on repair cost would be appreciated.

I would feel more comfortable if someone that specialize in autos, not cameras and computers, attempt to answer my inquiry. The vehicle has been recently tuned up.

Code P0411 is air injection flow there are many possible causes the most common is the vacuum hose for the injection (combi valve) brakes off. The air injection pumps are also know to fail but not as often the combi valve can fail as well but not as often

--
SAIS Pump - Pumps fresh air into the exhaust manifold.
SAIS Combi-Valve - Controls flow of fresh air into the exhaust manifold when vacuum is applied.
SAIS Solenoid - Controls the vacuum to the kombi valve, vacuum is sourced from the intake manifold.
--
(SAIS) = Secondary Air Injection System
--

The purpose behind the whole thing is to get extra oxygen into the exhaust stream to help heat the catylitic converter faster... that's it. The OBD expects to see a 'lean' condition from one of the O2 sensors when the pump runs... if it doesn't it trips the code.

This will be a small belt driven air pump for emission control, that directs air either to the intake or through the exhaust. When this codes, the problem will be either that the pump has failed or one of the in line check valves has failed. The check valves are located on the hoses that lead to and from the pump.

Although my listed expertise is computers, I have many years as a automotive shop foreman. I developed arthritis and had to do something else, computers don't work my hands as hard. If you don't believe me. Call the service dept at your local dealership and ask what the secondary air injection system is, they will tell you at no charge. dustboner's solution sounds just like mine and he a car guru.

Test the check valves by taking them off and blowing through them. Air should only flow in one direction, if it flows in both, then there's your problem. Test them all, don't assume that the first bad one you find is the only one. If this fixes your problem, I would appreciate the fixya rating, even though I'm just a computer expert.

Hi ecudave, i will go for a tune-up / clean up; the injection system, intake and replacing the sparks, regular maintenance like this will surely clean you emmision. as per re[air cost or shop costs, that will still depend on which part to clean or to work on or even to replace like the spark, but it will not be more than $400.

hope that helps

I have a 1998 GMC Jimmy, 6 banger, automatic. Getting trouble code P0452. What do I do? Truck seems to drive fine but I am worried it will not pass the emissions test with this code. Help.....pleas

Your not going to inspection obviously, without
checking for OBD Codes & making sure all
Emission Monitors run, or you just waste your time
as usual, sitting in line to fail

TYPE: OBD PO452 to see your codes

Going to have to component test the Evap System
& find the problem & resolve

When I cold start my car there's a fan that kicks in for a couple min. Well it has got louder lately so I looked under the hood and there is a part about the size of a grapefruit at the bottom front part...

That noise is the secondary air pump (an emissions device) and it appears to be failing. If you have emissions checks in your state inspection, when it fails completely you'll end up with two codes and a check engine light and will not pass inspection. I assume you hear this only on cold start, correct? If so, then it's your secondary air pump.

Obd code of p0411 on a 1999 ford mustang 3.8 v-6 what do I check to correct

That's s failure of the secondary air pump. It'll have to be changed. It's an emissions component meant to help with cold start emissions. It won't cause engine running trouble but at inspection time you'll fail for smog. Change it before then and you'll be fine.

Did not pass state inspection (vehicle)

First the fault codes,
U110C is No Fuel Level Bus Message
U0155 is No Cluster Bus Message.
Unfortunatly you have to be able to communicate with the instrument cluster with your scanner to diagnoise and I do not think an aftermarket scanner can do this.

There won't be - the secondary air injection system is strictly for cold-start emissions. You won't see any effects in driving, but if you have any sort of emissions check in your state's inspection, you will fail.

Diagnostic code po411

The P0410 code refers to the emissions system.
The AIR pump puts air to the exhaust to lower emissions. It takes in outside air and pumps it through two one-way check valves into each bank of the exhaust.
About 90% of the time that this code is set, the one-way check valves have worn out or failed and allow water (which occurs naturally in the exhaust) back into the pump. In any cold climate, especially in climates with higher humidity, this water may be more excessive. The water partially fills the AIR pump, it can then freeze. When the PCM commands the pump on, if the pump is frozen it cannot turn, thus overloading the circuit and "popping" the fuse.

In here you can find the Trouble Codes List:
The CODE mean P0411 Secondary Air Injection System Incorrect Flow Detected

Good luck!!!

Check engine light and other inspection failures

Sounds like an intake air temperature sensor replacement would be a good place to start, then clear codes & see what happens.

Engine light on, codes PO455 and PO411 pulled.

P0411 Secondary Air Injection System Incorrect Flow Detected and P0455 Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (Large Leak). These 2 particular codes are sometimes inter-related.

With a p0455, the most common repair is to:
  • Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the codes, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
  • Otherwise, replace the gas cap, and/or
  • Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses (you may hear a vacuum noise or smell fuel), repair if necessary
Let me know if you have anymore questions!

Sincerely,

JC
