When was last trans fluid & filter change? Should be done every 30k or 3 years - sooner if you do any towing. I'd start there and have system flushed at same time.

It is quite likely to be a failed shift solenoid, causing inability to find low gears. There should be a trouble code stored, causing the O/D lamp to blink.

Was pushing snow and heard aloud ping while in reverse and it quit pulling.all forward gears still work. sounded like a u-joint. believe me i no that sound.i drive it like i stoled it. lol.but thats what...

not sure if this is an automatic or manual transmission 1st (automatic)if all forward gears are still working what it sounds like is that the reverse drum in the transmission has come apart. which will eventually cause the forward gears to start to go if thats the case, the rapir for the reverse drum is internal the transmission will need to be rebuilt. you can just put a reverse drum, but my opinion is there will be more damage and while its out might as well rebuild the entire transmission. you didnt mention if it was 4 wd or not and only rarely have i seen a transfer case cause the same issue, once most recently in a f150 with a manual transmission i was working on the chain stretched so bad it lost reverse but had all forward gears. 2nd (manual) could have lost the reverse synchronizer whic again the trans will need to be repaired either with just a syncro or complete rebuild. hope this helps

My jimmy won't shift into high gear or reverse, it just revs up. Other gears still work. This came on supers suddenly, drove it somewhere and it was fine, then when drove about 10 miles towards home, it...

Does it also hold first gear longer that it should and then shift right from 1st to 3rd? It sounds like you broke the sun shell in the transmission. The trans will need to replaced or rebuilt.

1989CHEY., AUTO NO REV, NO HESTITATION IN OTHER GEARS

This 700R-4 transmission is dead. The sun gear reaction shell has cracked around the input gear collar. You may also have input shaft damage, a bad torque converter, a bad low/reverse clutch, a burned reverse drum and power band, and many other bad possibilities.
The good news is that since it already needs a complete rebuild (guaranteed), you can continue to drive it until it just quits; you can't hurt it any more, and only a complete rebuild will fix it. Fluid/filter and nobody's miracle additive is going to help. By the way, never use any kind of transmission fluid additive: it's just snake oil, and it's not going to help.
I have been a GM mechanic for thirty-five years, and unfortunately I have seen this exact problem many times.
