i have the same problem and replaced the abs sensor which seemed to correct the problem for a couple of weeks then the lights came back on and speedo quit working again. not sure if it is a faulty sensor or something else possibly cuasing the sensor to go out. please help. the local cops aren't taking the bad speedo excuse anymore. lol.

Same problem here, found 3 places that say it is the abs sensor:

Had this problem with my 1999 Ram 1500. There is a sensor at the top of the rear differential for the ABS system. That sensor went bad and replacing it took care of the problem. What caused mine to go bad was apperantly water got into the differential when launching and loading my boat. check to see if gear lube needs to be replaced also.
The answer above is perfectly correct. When the ABS sensor on the diff goes bad the speedo no longer will work, the odometer stops recording mileage and both brake and ABS light comes on. You also loose O/D or "Lock-up" in the torque converter. The sensor is inexpensive and can be changed in about 30 mins. Good Luck!

The fix for your truck is the ABS speed sensor located in the top of the differential housing , held in with one stud . Your speedometer is calculated through the ABS controller. Replacing that sensor will fix your problem.

Im trying to fix a p38 1999 wabcoD abs traction failure prpblem, live data for the abs sensors signal all round are the same and goes up and down with road speed.the wheel speed os&ns rear,up

Erratic signals come from the speed sensors(all that I found). At the sensors by the tires/CV axles. When I tear them apart (the bearings) they have fine metal around them. The causes the erratic signals. As you said, they seem normal at most points. But you have to watch and see where(the signal) they jump. Could be 2 MPH or 20 MPH. Replace that wheel bearing.

SOUNDS LIKE A BAD SPEEDOMETER if you can use an OBDII while driving and look for DTC output from speed sensor. possible loose connection can cause this as well

Abs light brake light on not shifting

look under the truck at the ****** and check the wiring to the sensors if good may be a bad sensor, also check the wiring and connections to the abs wheel sensors [ located from frame to the hub behind the rotors ] the abs also acts as speed sensor if problem was with an abs sensor at the[ hub] wheel usually set the brake system to normal power brakes [if u hit brakes hard will lock up or skid wheels] with the abs light coming on if the speed sensor at ****** malfunction can and usually causes shift problems

My ABS light came on about 3 months ago. Around the same time my speedometer started jumping and acting erratic. Now it doesn't work at all. I haven't gotten my ABS fixed yet. Does the ABS have...

unfortunately it doesn't, it runs off of a different speed sensor.. these vehicles are known for the speedo going out their is a defect in the instrument cluster, and you will have to have the entire unit replaced. while working at a gm dealer, I replaced hundreds of them..

Speedometer and air conditioning problems - Ford Focus Saloon

The VSS (vehicle speed sensor) sends the signal that activates the speedometer. Interestingly enough the signal is also sent to the radio to adjust the volume for road noise. That would explain your perception that it is worse when listening to the radio. Now, solving your problem may not be as easy as following the link between these two devices, but I would check the vehicle speed sensor first.
