Question about 1999 Mazda Protege

2 Answers

I recently purchased a 99 Mazda Protege. I live in VA so I went to get it inspected and it failed because it seems someone has cut the sway bar in the front and completely removed the one that is in the back. When I called the Mazda dealership they told me there was no sway bar in the back. Is this true? Also, is the sway bar actually needed to pass an inspection? I was quoted $1060 to get it replaced! Online isn't helping me very much because I can't even figure out where to buy a sway bar to find someone else to get it replaced. The links are easy to find but actually getting the whole bar, the links, and the bushings replaced seems practically impossible. Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Absolutly not, Required for inspection. And no your vehicle does not have one in the rear. You have a solid axle I would take to get a sec. opinion, for sure, A sway bar is mostly used for racecars for distrubate wight. There is a lot with them but not a front wheel drive, I could be wrong but i have never seen one, But i would still get a sec, anytime you have a major issue that there trying to cost you a sm fortune, best of luck to you.

I think i would take my vehicle to a difrent shop
if dealer ship says no swaybar go with them
they have the complete pedigree on that unit
and if one was available they could order for you
yes it is needed it is part of the suspension but 1060$$$$$ is alot of coin
get second opinion and price at difrent shop

Install rear sway bar

a sway bar is usually u shaped and hooks to the body and the tops of the u hook to the axle with links that have bushings. most jeeps dont have a rear sway bar.the panhard bar is the rod that goes from one side of the axle to the body on the opposite side. its sometimes mistakenly called sway bar. it keeps the body from moving side to side around corners. then there are the torque bars they keep the axle from trying to rotate when accelerating.
none of this would be real expensive but if its been lifted a bunch then you may have problems

Did they check the wiring in the ECM wiring loom? The car's computer would have a separate wiring and have a lot of them inside compared to the rest of the car. This happened to me once and had the car ECM rewired because of it.
