You do not mention what the problem is but if it is that you do not see them they may be the coil pack style of ignition which means you have to remove the plastic covers on each head and take off each coil (which also has the wire boot tip on it) and the plugs are under there. If that is the issue do each - one at a time - so you do not mix the coils up.

Compression, spark , timing , fuel for any engine to run. Don't forget a stopped up catalytic convertor will have the same effect as you described. Backfiring of course is fouled plugs, bad plug wires, look for arcing from wires when it is dark outside. If it has a distributor check for cracked cap, had my 91 GMC start backfiring then die due to ignition module inside distributor going bad. It would start back up after it cooled for about 10 minutes.

Something else wrong with that cylinder. Check compression and swap injectors, etc.

98 ford e 150 van idles in park fine. But when accelerating, hesitates and jerks. changed fuel filter, but still jerks.

Did you try changing plugs and WIRES!! wires are the most common cause of this problem, under load if you have a bad cracked wire it will "leak" the spark causing a weaker spark there for making your spark at the plug weak not burning the entire charge in the cylinder. If this still doesn't solve your problem being the cheap way (im sure it may fix it) try by changing your coil packs let me know what happens. If all else fails you may have a sloppy injector

Spark plugs change

remove the spark plug lead from the plug, blow out any dirt etc from around the plug, undo the plug and remove from the vehicle, make sure the plug has the right gap setting before installing into the engine.
Check each plug that you remove for any sign of a wet or oily plug which are signs of more serious problems.
If all the plugs are dry with just a light brown carbon deposit on them they are firing ok.
Hope this helps
