You're not missing anything, but your repair guy is. Find a new shop, the guy needs to do more than just clear the codes, he has to repair the reason they are there. If you know what the codes are, I may be able to help you.

Your guy is just clearing codes, he's not reading them and addressing what codes/faults are there, Find another repair guy.

Cleared check engine light. How do I pass smog check?

Clearing the Check Engine light does not repair anything - it only turns off the light and clears the error codes. The problem(s) that caused the light to occur are still going to be present and the light will probably come back on, anytime from a few minutes to a few days depending on the problem(s). What you NEED to do is to extract the error codes that come with the light and take the corrective action(s) to repair the deficiencies. That will probably make the vehicle able to pass smog checks. Of course, now that you've cleared the Check Engine light, you've also erased the error codes, so you will need to wait for it to return to get the data you need for repairs.

My CE light is on. The code is PO420. It is a 2002 Corolla. Smog is due. Two years ago, the same thing happened. I bought a scanner, cleared the light. Took it to smog. Passed. But this year, I cleared...

The P0420 is for the catalyric converter, you'll have to have it replaced. It will fail the test as long as the light is on. Clearing the code information also clears the monitor infor, to pass the monitors required you'll have to put some miles on it in both city and highway driving, not all monitors may be required so check with your local smog station which ones have to pass.

My 1993 Toyota 4runner will not pass smog. The check engine light has been on for some time now. I went to a shop to have it cleared and the mechanic only reset the computer not clear it.I was ordered to a...

Most likely the problem is a bad O2 Sensor. In any case a head gasket will run about $20 and 6 hours of work to replace but I doubt very seriously that is the problem. The check engine light keeps returning because the problem is still present that caused it to activate in the first place. it doesn't matter how many times you reset it. I would start by replacing the O2 Sensor, assuming the vehicle has one. If it doesn't have an O2 Sensor then you need to look at the Map Sensor or Catalytic Convert as being possible problems. If the engine runs better after you clear the code though until the code returns then I wold bet the problem is the Oxygen Sensor more commonly known as the O2 Sensor. They run about $40 at Auto Zone.

Keeps failing emission check engine light not on

As you probably know by now there is no way to pass an emissions test as long as the check engine light is on....Your car is what they call an OBD2 system... You need to have the diagnostics codes pulled by a special tester specifically for OBD 2 systems... Once codes are pulled fix if necessary any problem and have the codes cleared... This will turn the check engine light off an enable you to pass smog providing your car is running properly...

I'm trying to get my '96 MK VIII to pass smog but 3 monitors won't complete. The guy at the garage said some thing about doing a drive reset or something? Any suggestions?

Your car is equipped with sensors, that monitor
different functions of the drivetrain, usualy emissions
related. When one of these sensors detects a malfunction, it sends a signal to the cars computer
that in turn sends a signal to you via the check engine light. The computer stores these codes until
the problem is fixed. But the comp. retains the codes
until cleared. If you clear the code with an obdII scanner, the inspection computer will detect this and
reject it. To keep people from scaming the system.
A drive reset is to drive the car about 100 miles I
believe. To make sure the problem has been repaired
The computer will now reset itself.
I hope this helps. Good luck.

2003 Toyota Camry Se V6 has a check engine light after failing smog check test by Fault Code P0500. Unsure why it failed just had some transmission & engine work done at the dealership a couple of...

I had the same problem, then took my car to an expert repair shop who diagnosed the sensors and
found no problem with the car. They notified the DMV who was unaware of the problem, who then told the repair shop (John's Bascom Automotive) that they will adjust their computer system to allow a "two speed idle test". My bill was $95 and I still have to pay for a smog test after driving around for
a couple of days to clear the computer monitors, a fair amount and I gladly paid it.

John advised me that I'd get no satisfaction with Toyota or the DMV. I went to the dealership where I
bought the car and they said that the smog stations don't know what they're doing. They charge
about $100 and work around the P0500 code but it takes them about two hours to do this. I told
them that I should have been notified about the dyno none-compatability by Toyota and that Toyota
should have notified the DMV beforehand. I wonder how many speed sensors are being replaced by
unknowing smog shops around the state. I got Toyota's main customer support phone number and
will call them Monday. I'm going to get my pound of flesh ($95 worth) from the DMV next week also.

Failed Smog Test - 4 codes for 2001 Isuzu Rodeo

Tune it up and replace the 02 sensor that keeps setting the codes bank 2 sensor 1. Have your oil and filter changed right before you go for a retest to. That will clear up 3 codes P0300, 0155 and 0154. You might have to replace the fuel sending unit to get rid of P0463 but if the gauge works OK I'd leave it alone.
