Yes, very common problem. pull the connector off your mass airflow sensor and see if there is dirt or corrosion in there. The connection is intermittent. If you cannot get the code to clear by cleaning the connector pins and terminals, you may need to get a new sensor. They are easy to replace, but they aren't cheap. The sensor is mounted on the big air pipe next to the filter box. It is held onto the pipe with 2 torx screws. If you take it out, never touch the wire with your hand or anything else. You can clean the wire with spray electrical parts cleaner. Please let me know if you have any questions, and thanks for using FixYa.

It's an EGR valve issue - either the valve is plugged w/carbon or the passage way is clogged. Carbon os like concrete to get out. Pull EGR valve an inspect, see of it's cleanable. In most cases you need to replace EGR valve.

Yes, this states mass air flow sensor or this could be a MAP sensor, either one is easy to replace. Disconnect the negative battery cable before proceeding. Locat rthe sensor, depree the inner clip on the connector and pull apart from the outter shell with two hands apart from one another. After replacement, reconnect the neg terminal and start your engine. Allow 20 minutes for the computer to learn it's fuel trim startegy. Turn on your aircondioner, then turn off after three minutes. Stop engine, allow 5 minutes, restart engine, your done.

Runs rough on startup

Run in to autozone, pep boys, or other major autoparts store & they will usually do a free code scan for you. Once you know code, easier & better/cheaper to fix, than guessing & replacing parts that are fine.

2006 Taurus surges

Take your car into an Autozone. They do free engine diagnosis when the check engine light is on. They'll hook it up to a reader and it'll give them a code to cross reference. That'll at least let you know why your check engine light came on. I'm sure it has something to do with the surging as well. You'll at least have a better idea of where to begin looking.

Idles okay, runs rough when gas applied

Either a bad MAP sensor, or TPS. What is the code for the check engine light? This will most likely tell you what it is.

99 taurus running rough smells funny light flashing

The reason the check engine light is flashing instead of on steady is because it is missing bad and the car companies did this to tell you to stop the car as soon as possible to prevent damage. That is the only time the light will flash off and on instead of being on steady.
The cause is a little harder to diagnose. It could be a fouled spark plug, a bad plug wire, an injector, stopped up fuel filter. I can't remember if that car has the distributer or the coil packs but you could have a problem there. If you have never changed the spark plugs or fuel filter, it is well over a hundred thousand miles to do so now. They say to change them at one hundred thousand but 50 to 75 thousand is better and you will get better mileage. The fuel filter needs to be changed every 20 thousand miles now days because of all the cheap gas we have to put in the cars.
This is for mechanics or technicians. If no one out there believes me about the mileage on the fuel filter, then take the filter off and see what comes out the back. Looks like black water to me.

My 2000 taurus keeps showing a #3 misfire code P0303. I have changed plugs, wires, checked the injector etc. Clear the code and for the most part it runs fine for a week or ? then light comes on again...

I had the same problem on my '02 Taurus, 3.0, V-6, 24 Valve engine. I replaced the plugs and plug wires which helped the problem but did not cure it. I then replaced the ignition coil (Motorcraft part # DG-485) which solved the problem. Has been running great since then...
