Question about Ford Ranger

3 Answers

I have a 1984 Ranger 2.0 engine. It belonged to my girlfriend who let it sit up a while. I got it to crank and run and started driving it. Everyonce in a while it would loose power and one time backfired. Now it will crank and run fine for a minute then start missing bad enough it kills out sometimes and has white smoke coming out of exhaust. I have been told by several people because of white smoke that it may be a head or gasket but it doesn't seem to be losing water. I had one of my friends tell me one of the cylinders may not be hitting but needed to put new spark plugs in to be able to tell. They haven't been able to help since then and I don't know what to do from replacing the plugs. Any ideas or something I can check.

If you have white milk shake looking stuff in the radiator or the oil on dipstick - back of oil fill cap, that is easy way to see blown head gasket. White smoke in exhaust is also head gasket sign. If you pull plugs look for bad buildup or the white tip area has turned green and it will also show head gasket. (burning green anti freeze turns plug green) Best way to tell is compression test via spark plug holes. It does not take a lot of lost anti freeze to have problems with a head gasket. Have had some in shop that only lost small amount of water in a weeks time that were still blown gasket. The symptoms you describe can also be from problem with the EGR system or vacuum leaks. Older cars especially have EGR get stuck and rubber vac hoses crack.

To check if one of the cylinders is not working try to pull out the hi tension cable for the spark plug one at a time. Do this with gloves on and minimal contact with the car's body. If a plug is removed on a cylinder and there is no change in the way it runs you have identified the culprit. While the engine is off inspect the spark plug. IT may just be a bad spark plug. The white smoke may be caused the bad gasket especially if it does not go out. Water level change can still be unnoticed since a small amount of water may cause this. If the car has just sit for a long time as you have said, this may be caused by bad fuel that stayed in the tank for a while. Check the fuel filter. This may have been clogged by the dirt from the bad fuel.

Check the oxygen intake system. I'm not sure but your car is eighter the caburator or fuel injected.

in anycase the white smoke and cuting off, backfiring and loosing power is cause of the caburator or oxygen sensor (in fuel injected cars).

get your oxygen intake system serviced. it fits your problems perfectly. seeing the age of your car I'm betting its caburator, have that serviced or replaced.

Not start after sitting

Try turning the key just to on. Listen for the fuel pump to run and quit. try this 2 or 3 times then attempt to start . if this works it may indicate a leak in the fuel system. Hope this helps

My 1984 ford randger 4x4 wont start on its own i have to role start it why

The sta srter may be deffective or wiring to starter may be deffective also these had a solenoid that went bad under the hood it usually sits on passengers side fender and has two large wires and one small wire you can try and jump the two large wires and see if it cranks will need two people though. also clutch switch will cause no crank issues.

94 4.0 dies while driving will start after sitting a while

Sorry to say someone will have to have tools ready to check it the next time it quits running.
Could be a relay, the ignition module, the coil, or anything else that can get hot and stop working.

My heater dont work in my 1984 ford ranger

It may be the thermostat is stuck in the open position. If you sit still does it warm up at all. If it gets warm sitting still then cools up when you start moving It could be the thermostat.

1984 buick regal 3.8 v6 engine won't start cranks but wont start

mcdevito75 here, under the distributor cap is a white retangle shaped ignition module it has a plug of about 4--6 wires to it that could be bad, no way to test and just the part cost $20-- $35.00 and you msay need a metric nut driver set to change it. Have your local shop do the job. If you belong to a mpotor club AAA towing may be free.
