Fan pulley is eating away at belt timing cover. the cover appears distorted from the last repair (timing belt maybe). i broke the foam gasket trying to hold the cover out to replace water pump. (the temp gage has been pegged) the last couple days. figured i just better go a head and replace cover. I guess removing the crank pulleys are necessary? Remove 17mm center bolt Then a pulley puller?

Yes, and if you have an automatic trans, you need a way to hold the pulley while loosening the bolt. A strap-style pipe wrench or take the starter out and jam the flexplate teeth. If you have manual trans, put in high gear and set brake. Sometimes you get lucky and the pulley comes off without a puller. If you need one and don't have, see if autozone will loan you one. Not sure water pump has solved your temp issues--has it? Timing cover is not a big deal in the scheme of things. You have a belt, right, and the cover is just plastic? Let me know if you have any problems.

To install:
  1. Install the oil pump drive gear and tighten the 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  2. Using a suitable seal installer, install a new crankshaft timing gear seal. Install the gear.
  3. Temporarily install the idler pulley and tension spring.
  4. If using the old belt, check the rotation direction chalk mark placed on the timing belt during disassembly.
  5. Install the timing belt on the crankshaft pulley.
  6. Install the lower timing belt cover, air conditioning idler pulley bracket, compressor bracket and the lower timing belt cover retaining bolts and nuts. Install the pollution system air pipe assembly.
  7. Install the crankshaft pulley and pulley retaining bolt and torque to specification.
  8. Turn the crankshaft pulley and align its groove with the 0 mark on the lower timing belt cover.
  9. Install the camshaft timing pulleys and timing belt as follows:
    1. Turn the crankshaft pulley and align its groove with the 0 mark on the No. 1 timing belt cover. If the engine has not been disturbed, the engine should still be in this position.
    2. Align the alignment marks on the camshaft timing pulleys and the No. 2 timing belt cover. Install the timing pulley.
    3. Install the straight pin into the hole.
    4. When replacing the camshaft or the camshaft timing pulley. Always align the center holes of the camshaft and timing pulleys and insert the straight pin. When reusing the camshaft or camshaft timing pulleys, check that the straight pin hole position is in the same position it was at disassembly, insert the straight pin. Install the plate washer and pulley bolt.
    5. Using a suitable camshaft pulley holding tool, hold the pulley and tighten the pulley bolts to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
    6. Check that the matchmarks on the camshaft timing pulley are aligned with those on the No. 2 timing belt cover.
    7. Install the timing belt to the intake camshaft timing pulley, the exhaust camshaft timing pulley and the idler pulley.
    8. Loosen the idler pulley mount bolt until the pulley is moved slightly by the spring tension. Tighten the idler pulley mount bolt to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
    9. Check that the timing belt tension is equal all the way through. Turn the crankshaft pulley 2 revolutions clockwise from TDC to TDC.
    10. Check that the alignment marks on the camshaft timing pulleys are aligned with those on the No. 2 timing belt cover.
    11. If the marks do not align, remove the belt and install it again.
    12. Install the No. 3 timing cover gasket, cover and retaining bolts.
    13. Install the power steering pump belt.
    14. Install the four bolts, fan clutch, water pump pulley and fan shroud.
    15. Install the fan shroud mounting nuts.
    16. Tighten the fan belt adjusting bolt and nut of the power steering pump.
    17. Install the 4 bolts to the fluid coupling (fan clutch) flange.
  10. Install the air conditioning drive belt.
  11. Install the thermostat and water outlet along with it retaining bolts.
  12. Install the spark plugs and spark plug wires.
  13. Install the radiator assembly along with the radiator hoses.
  14. Install the drive belts and adjust as necessary.
  15. Install the air cleaner case assembly with the air intake connector.
  16. Refill the coolant system.
  17. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Connect a timing light and tachometer.
  18. Start the engine and set the ignition timing. Recheck the idle speed adjustment. Check for leaks and add coolant as necessary.

1994 Holden Barina Swing 1.4L Head-Gasket


Hi Adrian, I'm not very clear on the nature of your problem. I'm guessing that your vehicle is a four cylinder in line engine. To replace the cylinder head gasket is rated as a major job and requires the following work to be carried out. The engine must be completely cold before starting any work. Disconnect the battery, drain the coolant and engine oil. Remove the fuel, coolant and all electrical connections to the carburation and ignition system. Remove the intake and exhaust manifolds followed by the tappet cover. It is also required to remove the fan belts, the crankshaft pulley and the front timing cover, Under the tappet cover is the valve assembly, which needs to be removed. The cylinder head bolts need removing in a strict sequential order, beginning from either end and spiralling in so that the last bolts loosened are those at the centre. Once the head is unbolted it should be measured to make sure that the face is not distorted in any way. Assembly is three times more complicated, requiring the correct torquing settings and the correct sequence of tightening, (beginning at the centre and spiralling outwards). You will also need to set the valve timing and clearances. If you would like to tackle the job after reading this, let me know and maybe I can give you pointers while you're on it. Coincidently we do not have that particular vehicle here so I have not had hands on experience with it. The information I have given refers to all four stroke internal combustion engines. The gasket appears as a very basic replacement, but fitting it is far from basic. Regards John

98 concorde 2.7 engine is eating drive belts and lower pulley wobbles. i suspect the pulley problem is reason for belt eating. i am looking for diagram of routing can not find. any other info i can get...


Yes you are correct the pulley is bad. More that likley the tensioner pulley id the issue. I reccomend changing all of the pullies. You should have a belt diagram under hoon on top of fan shroud. If not try owners manual. Google has some helpful sights also. Last resort you could go to your local parts store sometimes they can get a diagram from there sytem.

4.Ensure all sprockets and idler pulleys are clean. Install timing belt on crankshaft sprocket, oil pump sprocket, No. 1 idler pulley, and then No. 2 idler pulley in sequence. 5.Install timing belt guide with cupped side away from crankshaft sprocket and flat side toward timing belt. Install No. 1 timing belt cover and new gasket. 6.Align crankshaft pulley key groove with key in crankshaft. Install crankshaft pulley. Install and tighten crankshaft pulley bolt to specification. 7.Rotate crankshaft clockwise so cylinder No. 1 is at TDC on compression stroke. Ensure timing mark on crankshaft pulley aligns with "0" mark on No. 1 timing belt cover. If reusing timing belt, ensure reference mark on timing belt aligns with upper edge of No. 1 timing belt cover. 8.Rotate camshaft, and align hole in camshaft sprocket with alignment mark on camshaft bearing cap. See Fig. 2 . Install timing belt on camshaft sprocket. If reusing timing belt, ensure reference mark on timing belt aligns with the reference mark on camshaft sprocket. Ensure tension exists on timing belt between the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets.
CAUTION:DO NOT rotate crankshaft counterclockwise, as viewed from timing belt end of engine.
9.Loosen No. 1 idler pulley bolt 1/2 turn. Rotate crankshaft pulley 2 full revolutions clockwise from TDC to TDC. 10.Ensure timing mark on crankshaft pulley aligns with "0" mark on No. 1 timing belt cover, and hole in camshaft sprocket aligns with alignment mark on camshaft bearing cap. See Fig. 2 . If timing marks are not aligned, remove timing belt and reinstall. 11.Rotate crankshaft clockwise 1 and 7/8 revolutions and align crankshaft pulley "0" mark with 45-degree Before Top Dead Center (BTDC) mark on No. 1 timing belt cover. See Fig. 5 . 12.Tighten No. 1 idler pulley bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install No. 2 timing belt cover and gaskets. Install and tighten spark plugs to specification. 13.To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. A pulley or the tensioner isnt straight. Maybe why the old one broke?? you want to replace anything the belt touches while you have it apart. pulleys, tensioner, water pump.

Replacing a timing belt on a 1994 Ford Ranger


Instructions Things You'll Need:
  • Drain pan
  • Ratchet
  • Ratchet extension
  • Socket set
  • Small standard screwdriver
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Timing belt tensioner wrench No. T74P-6254-A
  • Large standard screwdriver
  • Torque wrench
  • Timing belt
  • Timing belt cover gasket
    Preparation
  1. Place a drain pan under the radiator and drain the coolant from the radiator.

  2. Squeeze the spring clamp holding the upper radiator hose to the radiator fitting with a pair of rib joint pliers and slide the clamp towards the engine.

  3. Twist and pull the upper radiator hose off the radiator.

  4. Remove the fan blade using a ratchet, ratchet extension and socket.

  5. Rotate the belt tensioner pulley using a breaker bar and remove the drive belt.

  6. Detach the water pump pulley using a ratchet, ratchet extension and socket.

  7. Pry off the access plug from the upper part of the timing belt cover using a small standard screwdriver.

  8. Set the transmission to Neutral and apply the Parking brakes.

  9. Rotate the crankshaft pulley with a ratchet, ratchet extension and socket to align the "O" mark on the crankshaft pulley and the "O" mark on the belt cover.

  10. Look through the cover access hole. If you see another timing mark on the camshaft sprocket aligned with the mark on the inner belt cover, cylinder number 1 is at Top Dead Center (TDC). If not, rotate the crankshaft one complete turn again and check for the alignment marks.

  11. Removing the Timing Belt
  12. Unscrew the four mounting bolts and the Phillips screw next to the access plug from the timing belt cover using a ratchet, ratchet extension and socket and Phillips screwdriver.

  13. Detach the crankshaft pulley using a ratchet, ratchet extension and socket and remove the belt guide (large washer) from behind the crankshaft pulley. You may need a pulley remover to take the crankshaft pulley off. If so, you can rent one from most auto parts stores.

  14. Loosen the adjusting bolt on the tensioner pulley assembly using a ratchet, ratchet extension and socket.

  15. Rotate the tension spring rollpin (this is the screw next to the adjuster bolt on the tensioner pulley assembly) away from the timing belt using timing belt tensioner wrench number T74P-6254-A. As you hold the timing belt loose, tighten the assembly adjuster bolt to lock the tensioner using the ratchet, ratchet extension and socket. Now remove the tensioner wrench.

  16. Remove the timing belt.

  17. Installing the New Timing Belt
  18. Install the new timing belt starting at the crankshaft sprocket. Route the belt in a counterclockwise direction over the auxiliary and camshaft sprockets. Properly engage the belt lugs on the sprockets' teeth and keep any slack on the belt to the right side, between the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets. Make sure not to rotate any of the sprockets as you install the timing belt.

  19. Loosen the adjuster bolt on the tensioner pulley assembly so the tensioner rolls against the belt. If necessary, push the tensioner pulley against the belt with a large standard screwdriver to remove any remaining slack on the belt.

  20. Make sure the transmission is in the Neutral position and the Parking brakes are engaged.

  21. Rotate the crankshaft two complete revolutions so that cylinder No.1 is back in TDC. This will help to tighten the timing belt on the sprockets.

  22. Tighten the adjuster bolt on the tensioner pulley assembly between 14- and 21-foot lbs. (19.0 to 29.0 Nm) using a torque wrench.

  23. Tighten the tension-spring bolt between 28- and 40-foot lbs. (38.0-54.0 Nm) using the torque wrench.

  24. Install the belt guide (large washer) and the crankshaft pulley. Tighten the pulley bolt with the ratchet, ratchet extension and socket.

  25. Install the timing belt cover with a new gasket using the ratchet, ratchet extension and socket and Phillips screwdriver.

  26. Reinstall the water pump pulley, drive belt, fan blade and upper radiator hose.

  27. Refill the cooling system with coolant.

  1. Allow the engine to cool and drain the coolant from the radiator and both engine block plugs.
  2. Remove the fan shroud and both radiator hoses.
  3. Remove the drive belts.
  4. Remove the water pump pulley.
  5. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  6. Remove the timing belt covers.
  7. Remove the water pump.

  3. Drain engine coolant into an appropriate container and retighten radiator drain plug.
  4. Remove upper radiator hose.
  5. Remove fan clutch assembly bolts.
  6. Remove 5 cooling fan shroud bolts.
  7. Remove fan shroud and fan as an assembly.
  8. Loosen alternator mounting bolts and remove drive belt from pulley.
  9. Remove fan pulley.
  10. Remove 4 cooling fan assembly bolts.
  11. Remove cooling fan assembly.
  12. Remove 4 bolts and upper timing belt cover.
  13. Remove 2 lower bolts and lower timing belt cover.
  14. Loosen adjusting bolt and remove A/C belt.
  15. Remove alternator belt.

  22. Pry tensioner away from timing belt and tighten lock bolt to relieve tension on the timing belt. NOTE: Mark the direction of timing belt rotation on the belt if it is being reused.
  23. Remove timing belt.

  1. Install timing belt with minimal slack from timing belt pulley to water pump and from water pump to camshaft pulley.
  2. Loosen tensioner lock bolt until tension is applied to timing belt. CAUTION
    Do not turn crankshaft counterclockwise.
  3. Turn crankshaft pulley 2 full turns clockwise and ensure timing marks are properly aligned.
  4. Tighten tensioner lock bolt to 33 ft lb (45 Nm).
  5. Apply a force of 21 lb to timing belt midway between idler pulley and camshaft pulley.
    • Deflection should measure 0.43-0.51 inch (11-13 mm)
    NOTE: if timing belt deflection is incorrect remove timing belt and install NEW tensioner spring.
  6. Install timing belt guide.
  7. Install crankshaft damper pulley.
  8. Install 5 crankshaft damper pulley bolts. Tighten bolts to 132 in lb (15 Nm).
  9. Install power steering pump drive belt.
  10. Adjust power steering pump drive belt tension and tighten lock bolt and mounting bolt.
  11. Install alternator drive belt.
  12. Install A/C drive belt.
  13. Install lower timing belt cover and bolts. Tighten bolts to 84 in lb (10 Nm).
  14. Install upper timing belt cover and bolts. Tighten bolts to 84 in lb (10 Nm).
  15. Install cooling fan assembly and 4 bolts. Tighten bolts to 27 ft lb (37 Nm).
  16. Install fan pulley.
  17. Install fan clutch and shroud as an assembly. Tighten bolts to 74 in lb (8 Nm).
  18. Tighten 4 cooling fan nuts to 16 ft lb (22 Nm).
  19. Adjust alternator belt tension and tighten alternator mounting bolts.
  20. Install upper radiator hose.
  21. Install fresh air duct.
  22. Connect battery negative cable.
  23. Refill/bleed cooling system.
DOHC To Remove:
  1. Disconnect battery negative cable.
  2. Remove fresh air duct.
  3. Remove 5 cooling fan shroud bolts and 4 thermo-modulated fan nuts.
  4. Remove 4 thermo-modulated fan shroud fasteners.
  5. Remove generator drive belt.
  6. Remove fan pulley (located above crankshaft pulley).
  7. Remove 4 bolts and splash shield (located under front of vehicle).

  9. Remove 5 bolts and upper timing belt cover.
  10. Remove 2 bolts and lower timing belt cover.
  11. Loosen tensioner lock bolt and pivot tensioner pulley outboard.
  12. Retighten tensioner lock bolt. NOTE: Mark timing belt for rotation if it is being reused.
  13. Remove timing belt.

  1. Align marks on timing belt pulley and pump body. Camshaft pulley alignment marks 79245g28.gif

  2. Align marks on camshaft pulleys with alignment marks on seal plate.
  3. Install timing belt. NOTE: No looseness should exist on the tension side and at the camshaft pulleys.
  4. Loosen tensioner lock bolt.
  5. Turn crankshaft 2 revolutions in direction of rotation and check that timing marks are still in alignment.
  6. Tighten timing belt tension lock bolt to 27-38 ft lb (32-52 Nm).
  7. Apply a force of 22 lbs to timing belt between camshaft sprockets.
    • Belt deflection should measure 0.30-0.33 in (7.5-8.5 mm)
    NOTE: Replace tensioner spring if timing belt deflection is excessive.

I'm going to assume you have the 4WD model..here are the instructions for removal and install:

  1. Drain the cooling system.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable Lower splash shield Upper and lower radiator hoses Coolant reservoir tank hose Fresh air duct Fan and shroud Loosen the alternator mounting and adjusting bolts Alternator belt Fan pulley and bracket Upper and lower timing belt covers and turn the crankshaft until No. 1 cylinder is at Top Dead Center (TDC). Loosen the tensioner lockbolt and pry the tensioner away from the belt Timing belt Loosen the tensioner bolt Water pump Tensioners from the water pump
To Install:
  1. Clean the surface of any old gasket material.
  2. Install or connect the following:

    Tensioners on the water pump Water pump and gasket. Torque the bolts to 19 ft. lbs. 25 Nm). Timing belt Loosen the tensioner lockbolt and allow the tensioner to rest against the belt. Torque the tensioner lockbolt to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm). Upper and lower timing belt covers Fan bracket assembly and fan pulley Drive belt Cooling fan and shroud Position the radiator and torque the bracket bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm). Torque the shroud bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm) and torque the alternator adjusting and mounting bolts Position the fresh air duct over the radiator and tighten the retaining bolt 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm) Radiator hoses and tighten the clamps Lower splash shield Negative battery cable
  3. Fill the cooling system.
  4. Start the vehicle and bring the engine to operating temperature. Check for leaks and repair if necessary.

Ensure tension exists on timing belt between the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets.
CAUTION:DO NOT rotate crankshaft counterclockwise, as viewed from timing belt end of engine.
9.Loosen No. 1 idler pulley bolt 1/2 turn. Rotate crankshaft pulley 2 full revolutions clockwise from TDC to TDC. 10.Ensure timing mark on crankshaft pulley aligns with "0" mark on No. 1 timing belt cover, and hole in camshaft sprocket aligns with alignment mark on camshaft bearing cap. See Fig. 2 . If timing marks are not aligned, remove timing belt and reinstall. 11.Rotate crankshaft clockwise 1 and 7/8 revolutions and align crankshaft pulley "0" mark with 45-degree Before Top Dead Center (BTDC) mark on No. 1 timing belt cover. See Fig. 5 . 12.Tighten No. 1 idler pulley bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install No. 2 timing belt cover and gaskets. Install and tighten spark plugs to specification. 13.To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Install all bolts/nuts on right (timing belt side) engine mount before tightening to specification. 14.On Camry, when installing control rod and bracket on strut tower and right (timing belt side engine mount, tighten bolts to specification in sequence. See Fig. 6 . On MR2, tighten engine
