If they are very bad car will have loud rumble sound that can get better or worse when cornering. To really check you need to remove rear brakes and try to spin hub with no load. If it spins smooth and easy and has no rough feel or barely moves by hand the hub is bad. Most front drive cars have hub with both inner and outer bearings included. Just replaced them on brother in laws Accord last night and it was only $60 for each at Advance - $129 for both sides, whole hubs with bearings, seals, and ABS ring included.

Snug them up, then back them off about two increments where the cotter pin goes in. Wheel should spin freely. If not back nut off.Take a short test drive, a km or so. Feel the wheels in the center, warm is normal, but not hot. If hot back the nut off.

jack the rear of the vehicle up, spin the wheel by hand, and put your free hand on the strut spring, if a bearing is bad , the roughness should travel through the suspension and you can feel it most amplified in the spring.

Back Tire on 1997 Nissan Quest xe is smoking from rear tire and smells like rubber burning.


Sounds like you have a brake or wheel bearing seized on that vehicle, best to let it completely cool off before attempting anything.
jack rear tire and support with jack stand, try turning the tire by hand once its off the ground, if it turns or doesn't turn either way you must pull the wheel and determine what the cause is or was for all that smoke and smell.
Pull the brake drum and check the wheel cylinder for leaks and if it is frozen holding the rear brake locked on that side if it is replace the brakes both rears and wheel cylinders both rears and the appropriate brake drums if they are worn out and heat cracked.
If the brakes appear to be hanging due to the emergency brake hanging up, spray the emergency cables, try to adjust the cables after you replace the brakes, bleed and adjust the system and walla you are safe and sound.
If you have a frozen wheel bearing you must remove the frozen bearing off the rear spindle stub shaft, either bty heat or impact chisel, check spindle for signs of wear if ok just lightly sand with 180 wet/dry paper, pull out the bearing and punch out the inner outer races along with the inner grease seal and replace all five items, repack the bearings and hub with a high temp resistant wheel bearing grease, re install the brake drum re install the hub nut and cotter pin to a proper torque and walla... A Front Wheel Drive Vehicle Can Have Two Types Of Rear Wheel Bearings: Serviceable Bearings, Or Nonserviceable, Sealed Bearings. When Sealed Bearings Fail, The Bolts Holding The Bearing And Hub To The Axel Or Control Arm Must Be Removed. When Installing The New Bearing Assembly, Torque The Bolts To Specifications.Some Manufacturers require The Use Of New Fasteners When Rear Bearings And Hubs Are Replaced.

When A Serviceable Wheel Bearing Is Used, The Bearing Can Be Disassembled And Packed With Grease.It Is Serviced Like A Front Wheel Bearing On A Rear-wheel-Drive-Car.

This could be one of several problems: If the noise increases with speed, and you are only hearing it from the rear differential and not the transmission, it could be the rear differential carrier bearings, or rear axle bearings going bad. If you are only hearing the noise upon acceleration or deceleration, the rear differential ring and/or pinion gears may be going bad and the rear differential will need an overhaul. You'll have to get the rear wheels off the ground and see if you can pinpoint the location of the noise with something such as a stethoscope. If it's coming from the rear differential, you'll need to pull the bolts and the cover to determine if the gears are still in good shape, or if there is any pitting. Same with the carrier bearings; if you see pitting/ discoloration, they'll need replacement. If the noise is coming from one side towards the end of the axle shaft near the wheel, it's most likely a axle bearing going bad, and you'll need to pull the wheels, remove the diff. cover to release the C clip which holds the rear axle in place at the differential, and pull the axle out. You also need a special tool with a slide hammer to remove the axle bearing and seal.

The ABS comes on for no apparent reason.New calipers,rotors,drums,shoes,springs etc.were replaced.What do you think could be wrong?


If it has rear drums,check for a adjustment,also a wheel bearing assembley can cause this,or a bad sensor on one of the wheels.

How do I determine if the rear wheel bearings are the problem on my 95 camaro.


Hi there,
first thing you'll have to jack the rear wheels and put the car on axle stands both sides.
Put some good wheel chokes in front and make sure the car is sitting nice on the stands.
Check for any excess play at the wheel hub by moving it side ways and up & down.
Now start the car, put it in drive and let the wheel turn and carefully put your hand on the rear suspension and feel if you sense any "rough" noise or humming noise. This is how you can diagnose the rear wheel bearings.

2002 ford Ranger 3.0 v6 (auto) rear end noise when accelerating on curves.


Remove the drums and check your rear brakes. If okay, you may try testing a couple different tires in the rear. Belts separating and flat spots show worse at higher speeds.
It could be bearings if truck is used alot while loaded. Remember 1/4 ton is only 500lbs. High miles, hard driving, or if it was wrecked in rear could all cause these smptoms.
