Question about Dodge Dakota

I have a 99 dakota put on a wire hook up for a boat blew the fuse for the brakes replaced it .now i have no tail light on the truck.changed out light switch still dont work

1994 dodge dakota brake light ground location


The ground wiring on newer vehicles is a little complicated. Older cars, the ground would have been to the body around the tail-lights, but these have a ground wire in the harness and is connected to the turn-signal switch, and other sources. I don't think you have a ground problem. Does the fuse blow as soon as you press it into the fuse-block, or when you step on the brake? I believe you have a dead short somewhere, possibly a pinched turn-signal wire close to the tail-light assembly. Brake lights work through the turn-signal wires from the turn-signal switch on the steering column. That's how you can have one side blinking for turn while the other side stays on for brake. I'm kind of shooting in the dark here because I don't know what all you've done. If you replaced the turn-signal switch in the steering column, you may have pinched a wire or something there. Another thing, if the fuse doesn't blow as soon as you press it in, will both turn-signals work as long as you don't press on the brake? If you can provide a little more information, I might be able to help you more. One last thing....Have you replaced tail-light/turn-signal bulbs? If so, be sure you used the right bulb. You should only have two bulbs, one for back-up lights and one 1157-type combination for tail-lights and turn-signals. I have seen people use a single contact (1056) bulb in place of a 1157, which creates a short from brake/turn-signal back into the tail-light circuit. I do have a 1994 Dodge Dakota.

could be a fuse that blew. check your fuses. if not the fuse then a wire somewhere is lose and need to be hooked back up. or it could be touching metal.... the wire that is.

1998 Chevy Silverado 1500 Brake light fuse blew, replaced, fuse blew again, replaced relay and fuses. both under hood and in side fuse panel. Fuses keep blowing on turn signal and brake lights. Checked...


you obviously have a short to ground on one of the wires to the back (if it was the front the brake shouldn't blow the fuse). the most common problem is usually in a trailer light harness. if you look under the drivers side rear of the truck, down under the tail light there will be a plugin junction. pull this plug-in apart and see if the fuse still blows. if it does then the problem is forward of that connector, if it doesn't then the problem is behind that plugin. be sure to check for "green death" (electrical corrosion) at all joints especially any trailer hook ups.

I have a rear brake light on a camper shell I want to hook up on a 2006 dodge dakota. What is the best way to do this?


Good Morning, I have seen this done and done this same thing before. Normally you will just tie into your bake light at the tail light depending on how it (the camper) is set up. You could also tie into the one into the third brake light. I hope this helps you out it really isn't bad. If you have any more questions pleae feel free to let m know.

I was wiring a trailer pigtail to an 06 wrangler and blew the turn signal bulbs but the fuses are good. I have running and reverse lights but no brake lights or turn signals


If the bulbs and the fuses are good, check the brake light switch. You might of shorted out the switch when working on the pig tail. Always use a test light or volt meter when installing pig tails. This way you can check for power and ground before hooking a wire up to help prevent shorts. But by what you have said it does sound as if the brake light switch is now bad.

99 mercury mystide had rear running light broken


If the driver's side tail light is working, it's not a fuse. Use a test light to check for power at the bulb holder. One terminal will be for tail light, the other for brake/turn light. If the is constant power for tail light, replace bulb. If no power, trace wiring from bulb holder to driver's side junction. Probable broken wire between the two tail lights.

Consider what you have changed when stereo was installed. Using existing wiring is not like it used to be. The electronics has changed that. Going from fuse block is not a good thing.
Try undoing and examining wiring for damage and consider routing from battery. Cables are available for extra wiring from the battery.

No brake lights, fuses keep blowing and wont shift out of park


I would look for a wiring short in the trunk at the taillamp area, or, inspect the sockets for the taillamp bulbs for corrosion. In any case, you have a short circuit in the trunk area, also check the wire that comes from the body & goes up the trunk hinge on the driver side; that wire may be chafed, and it may be shorting out. Boat traler lights dim when break is applied


Your turnsignal flasher needs to be replaced with a heavy duty flasher.
also, your boat trailor wiring harness is grounded incorrectly or the harness pig tail is wired incorrectly.
this is why when you excite your tail lights and brake lights that your reverse lights come on and the reason that the lights are dimmimg is because your circuits are looking for the correct ground.
