Question about 1987 Toyota Tercel Liftback

1 Answer

I have a 1987 Toyota Tercel Liftback. Today while drivving I heard a clicking sound from under the hood for about 2 seconds then the charge light came on. When the engine reaches high RPMs as in increasing speed the light goes off. It comes back on immediately following slowing down. The clicking sound is reminiscent of the clicking you hear when a battery is low/dead and you try to crank.

With the engine OFF, look at the belt(s) going to the alternator. it is probably loose. if so, then it is likely that the idler/ tensioner pulley is bad (the clicking is the bearings inside the pulley rattling around inside the pulley wheel) the clue is clicking + charge light ON.

Fuel is not getting to the fuel filter in my 1987 toyota tercel. how do i fix this? i think there is a clog in the gas lines but how do i get to them?

Make sure you have power to your fuel pump. If so, remove the filter, and use an air hose to blow the line out going into the tank.

Well it was'nt the timing belt! Turns out it's all in the fuel pump. If i turn the ignition to the on position for about 5 to 10 seconds before starting, it cranks right up.
