Temp gauge pegged to far right all the time temp sensor is ok. How do i check the gauge in dash? It is on a 1999 gmc sonoma 2.2 engine.

What make , model an year vehicle ? Most newer vehicles ,from 1996 till now the temp sensor is an input to the PCM / ECM , the engine computer .The PCM / ECM sends temp. info to the instrument cluster on a serial data communication network , You would need a scan tool to test this ! Advanced scan tools have test installed , special tests called bi-directional tests . would be able to check gage with this test . Some year GM vehicles had problems with the stepper motor that moves the needle . Old temp. sensors wired directly to temp gage you could disconnect the sensor an ground the wire an see if the gage move to full hot .

1997 Hyundai Elantra has heat but temp gauge does not rise.

If the coolant is below a certain level, the temperature sensor will not read anything and the temp gauge will not rise. Replace the cap, and check that you have enough coolant in the system. If this does not solve the problem, you will need to test/troubleshoot the coolant temperature sensor.

Temp gauge off charts

Are you mistaking the engine temp sensor for the engine temp sending unit? The temp sensor is for the fuel injection system and the temp sending unit is for the gauge. If you asked for a sensor thats what they sold you. You need to ask for a sending unit.

The problem is usually one or the other.  Both get 5 volts from the engine computer.  If the problem is the gas gauge, you'll have to change the sender in the tank.  Generally, an aftermarket pump/sender unit is $150-175.  Get one and drop the tank to install.  The temp gauge is another matter and it could be dirty coolant.  If both are going nuts together, you'll need a new computer.  Junk units are fine.
