I did find a thread that referred to an "always in a forward gear" A4LD problem, ... Eventhough band adjustment should not have anything to do with the .... in the transmission and then it auto shifts through the gears normally.

For car not changing gears and not shifting out of park mode ,it can be shifter assembly issue, or it can also be transmission issue. Get the shifter assembly inspected with ignition OFF.

If your transmission is a 700r4 (4l60) you have a reverse band that engages when you want to go in reverse. since it drives forward your low reverse clutch and your fwd clutch are working. This leaves the band which was probably slipping now is not engaging.

Check the linkage at the transmission. Have somebody move the selector while you watch the linkage move. It might be out of adjustment for reverse, or be binding up.

Sounds to me like the valve body is sticking causing the low/reverse clutch pack to stick. Might try a fluid/filter change. If all else fails, at least the 700r4 is a cheap/easy transmission to rebuild.
