There should be a belt tensioner back towards the fire wall, you should find a square hole that a 3/8 drive ratchet fits into, if i remember right this should fix ya up, good luck!

The serpentine belt on a 2.4L is VERY loose after alternator replacement. Can I tighten it or is the tensioner or belt dead?

I think you are on the right track, suspecting the tensioner. It should spring back after you release it. There is a pretty heavy spring inside, it may have broken.

I need to know how to change the serpentine belt on a 1994 chevy cavalier

    • 1 Open the hood, and locate the auto-tensioning bolt in the center of the pulley system. This bolt will be in the center of a pulley that does not appear to be connected to any component.
    • 2 Turn the auto-tensioning bolt clockwise with a socket wrench to release tension on the belt.
    • 3 Slide the belt off the pulley system.
    • 4 Orient the new belt on the pulley system according to the belt path printed on the underside of the hood and next to the hood latch mechanism on your Cavalier. Leave slack in the belt around the tensioner pulley.
    • 5 Slide the belt over the tensioner pulley while you have the auto-tensioner pulley bolt turned clockwise as far as it will go. Make sure that the belt is sitting centered in all the various pulley grooves on the pulley system.
    • 6 Release the tension pulley bolt, and apply tension to the belt. The auto-tensioner will automatically apply the correct amount of tension on the belt.

How do i replace my serpentine belt on my 1998 chevy cavalier 2.4

I have a 2.4 also. The secret is to use a ratcheting box wrench on the tensioner pulley. thread the belt onto all of the pulleys except the tensioner. Then slip the ratcheting box between the fender wall and the face of the pulley. (keep the belt on the engine side of the wrentch) then pull up on the tensioner as far as space will permit. wedge something under the tensioner to hold it where it is. ratchet back down on the wrench and pull up again. this should lift the tensioner up high enough to slip the belt into place.

I have a 1994 chevy cavalier 2.2, i replaced the belt tensioner, how do you set the tensioner so it will keep the belt tight? I loosened the bolt and got the belt tight, then i tested it and the belt...

U do not loosen any bolts to adjust tension.tighten all bolts first. Then with a 3/8 ratecht in the slot of the belt tensioner rotate the tensioner until you can install the belt correctly.then release the tensioner and take out the ratchet.

How do you remove the entire belt tensioner on chevy calalier 2.2 liter

Should only have the one bolt. The same one you turn to move the tensioner to replace the belt. Only now your loosining the bolt instead of tighten which is the way it turns to release belt tension.
