Question about 1991 Ford Explorer

1 Answer

94 ford ranger 2.3 stnd 2wd, jerks and backfires after warms up, unpluged new alternator, starts running normal again. replaced alternator different brands, same problem. getting 14.5 volts on alternator when running, 13.3 when not. Thought if maybe I put a manuel regulator on the wiring harness coming from the alternator it might take the overage off causing the computer to make everything malfuntion. If this would be a solution which color wire would I put it on? Stuck for 2 wks out of town trying to resolve this problem. Thanks Vicki

Talk with an auto electrician as there are now many alternators that are controlled by the ECM ( voltage regulator is in the ECM) 14.5 volts -14.38 volts is good voltage control so the problem may not be the regulator at all
problem could be a shorting diode in the circuit or other problems not connected to either the alternator or regulator such as wiring shorting out , bad connections etc
may even be an ECM problem

This is not rare. Possibly bad "new" alternator or bad "new" regulator. Have seen it happen many times. :-)

Have the fault codes read. Replace faulty items. Use only genuine items as non-genuine replacement are not always compatible with the OEM fitted CPU units. Look for position sensor with intermittent fault. Check all wire connectors for loose or dirty.

I know this is going to sound crazy, but my son's truck was having the same thing's going on... fixed alot of the same things... still nothing. sometimes i could pump the **** out of it, and keep cranking, and it would fire for a moment and then die. Some times it would start and run til it got warmed up, and then either run like ****, or just die went down to Schucks and had them test the alternator, and they said it was good... tried a few other things, and then gave up, and it sat for several months. Was talking to a different guy at Schucks again one day and he said that he thought that he remembered there being some kiind of a problem with the alternators in the same year frame... so I went back to the house, pulled the alternator out (truck wasn't running) and had them test it again... sure as **** it was weak... bought new one threw it in, and the trucks been running every since... reason for long story? I was told everything else under the sun to replace, but this was what was wrong.
