Question about 1997 GMC Jimmy

2 Answers

I think the alternator in my 1997 GMC Jimmy is bad, what should I do? I had the battery tested and was told it was good. The battery light stays on and the radio flickers on and off, and the battery gauge is in the red area. I have not tried to fix it as I don't know what or how to do it. Thank-you.

You can remove alternator and go have it checked or just replace. but first check all cables and belt tension for proper tension and clean connections. you can take the whole truck (drive) to the local garage and have a charge system done.

You need a new alternator most likely. They are pricey for this vehicle. For installation instructions.....Remove belt by placing a 1/2" rachet into hole on belt tensioner and release pressure on belt. Remove belt. Depending on the vehicle you may have to remove the belt tensioner assembly itself to access the alternator. Remove all wiring harness connectors to alternator, The main power lead is a 10mm nut. Remove all mounting bolts to alternator. Remove alternator. Reinstall new alternator reversing steps taken above.

(1997 GMC Jimmy) Battery will randomly go dead

I would check for a draw. You can do this by disconnecting the negative cable from the battery and hooking a test light from the cable to the battery. The light will be on if something is taking power off of the battery such as, dome light, glove box light, radio ect. make sure to have doors shut and everything off when you do this so it wont give you a false reading. If the light is on, you have a draw. if it is off you dont have a draw. Then from there you can figure out where the draw is coming from by opening the drivers door and accessing the fuse panel(OPENING THE DOOR WILL KEEP THE LIGHT ON BECAUSE IT WILL OPEN TH ECIRCUIT FOR THE DOME LIGHT, YOU CAN TAPE OR HOLD THE SWTICH INSIDE THE DOOR JAMB TO CLOSE THE CIRCUIT)when you access the fuse panel you can pull each fuse 1 at a time until the light goes off, when the light goes off. check what the fuse is for, that is where your draw is coming from. Common draws come from a faulty radio or glove box light stays on.

check the battery connections on both ends.  You have an electrical drain coming from somewhere.  It sucks but you have to check all wires for a ground out.  If you were recently in a collision check the electrical connections near that area.  Good luck.

I had a similar problem several years ago on my 97 Jimmy. There is a switch in the steering column that had gone bad, had to be replaced and no problem since. The symptons sounded just like yours. My trusted mechanic found the problem after a lot of testing and fixed it.
