Question about 2003 Kia Optima

1 Answer

Hi, I have a Kia Optima 2004, 4 cylinder, automatic transmission car. Couple of months back, "Engine light" turned on and the rpm-meter stopped working. Recently, since last 2-3 days, my car starts stumbles a bit when I accelerate at the highway ramps, or when I slow down to exit from a highway. I checked a mechanic yesterday, and he read the "engine light" code, and it said the following: Misfire 1 on cylinder 1 Misfire 2 on cylinder 2 Misfire 3 on cylinder 3 Misfire 4 on cylinder 4 He said, he would be able to take care of it, but meanwhile the vehicle would be ok to drive for 20-30 miles. I came home, and when I was driving, suddenly the "steering wheel" locked when I slowed down to take the turn, and eventually, vehicle stopped after I safely pulled it over. Although the battery is good, but car won't start. Any idea what may be the cause? Current mileage is around 66000, and I haven't replaced the timing belt. And its been around 9 months (or 5000 miles) since I top up all the fluids (transmission fluid, power steering, etc).

what do you mean by "a new engine"? or Did you mean to say a new "timing belt"? Any idea on how much it may cost? I checked the prices for the timing belt and its around $100.

The vehicle's cpu has shut the car off and turner on service mode. The reason for the misfire is the engine timing belt is shot. If the belt snaps well you'll be needing a new engine. The cpu shut the car down to prevent this. The solution is to service the vehicle and have the error codes cleared and reset. Only then will the vehicle cpu allow the vehicle to function.

By new engine I mean, that if the timing belt did snap, it will ruin your engine to an unrepairable state. This is what can happen that's why your car shut itself off to prevent that type of damages. Its like a failsafe. Changing the timing belt, and basic service, reset and clear the error codes ad you will be fine.

Your belt has not snapped yet !!!! you engine shut off to prevent this.

Is this an automatic? P1527, Basically, the tcm is telling the pcm to turn on the lite. You could have tranny problems? Could be issue with transmission range sensor? I saw a service bulletin, kt2007020701, that is a relearn procedure, if the pcm--tcm or transmission has been replaced. I don't know if relearn will help or not?

Start with the simple and replace the fuel filter. The fuel filter should be replaced every 15,000 miles or once a year to ensure the fuel system is running 100%. Auto Zone will have the fuel filter and can give you the step by step instructions to getting the job done with common tools. If it's the fuel pump failure, you have not gotten the car restarted. Good luck and keep me posted, be glad to know you got your car running 100% again soon and please rate.
