Question about Ford Crown Victoria

96 Crown Victoria cannot be turned off with key and ignition switch. Currently choking engine air inlet with rag to stop engine. Ignition always in run with all circuits energized reagrdless of ignitions switch position. Suspect PCM power relay failed closed.

    Fuse 7 is hot as u thought. The switch is new and is removable using the pin as you describe. The problem is that someone must have forced a screwdriver into the old switch and pryed or forced the mechanism inside the housing to break. i can see a plastic piece broken off through a viewing port just above the ignition switch hole. Can this plastic piece b replaced or repaired by removing the inner parts inside the switch hole or does the entire steering mechanism need to be replaced?

Hi, the PCM relay does run the injectors, but not the ignition. My guess is your ignition switch is stuck closed. You can try pulling up the relay, but I bet you'll still have power to the coils when you do. See if there is power at fuse #7 with the key off--that is a sure sign your ignition switch is closed in the run position. I don't have an exact procedure for replacing the switch, but your looks like the type that is mounted on the column and actuated by a rod running down from the lock. Take the knee kick panel off and see if you can spot it up there. It's held on by 2 screws.

    Sorry for the delay--so are you saying the switch is good but you can't turn it off because the linkage from the key barrel is fouled? And the plastic part that broke--is that part of the steering column shell? I would think you could get that at a salvage yard or maybe on eBay. The salvage yards usually want to sell the whole column rather than just a piece of one, but it may be easier to replace the whole column than that plastic part. It you can send me a pic of the damaged part, I could better advise you.

    You mentioned a plastic part, but I don't see that so far. Is there a black plastic tab that you had to push down to allow the key to be turned back?

    If the 94 model has the same design, here is a breakdown of all the little parts:

    The part you need may be #70 or somewhere thereabouts. It may be possible to get this from the dealer. I will check.

Anyway, I think all the parts seem to be available from Ford for a modest cost, so that is where I recommend you get the part. Then let me know if you need help installing it. In the meantime, you may need to remove the negative battery cable to kill the engine and save the battery. OK?

it sounds like the ignition cylinder has dropped a tumbler not sure of replacement procedure for ur car but it needs the ignition cylinder replaced

Ignition switch removal and repair for 1995 crown victoria

  1. Disable air bag system.
  2. Remove steering column shroud by removing self-tapping screws. Remove tilt lever if equipped.
  3. Remove instrument panel lower steering column cover.
  4. Disconnect ignition switch electrical connector.
  5. Rotate ignition key lock cylinder to RUN position, then remove two screws retaining ignition switch.
  6. Disconnect ignition switch from actuator.
  7. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
    1. If necessary, move switch slightly back and forth to align mounting holes with column mounting holes.
    2. Activate air bag system.
    3. Ensure proper operation of ignition switch in all positions.

I locked my keys in the trunk of my 2000 crown victoria. How can I get them out? HELP PLEASE!!!

The trunk release button will do the job. If the ignition needs to be on for the trunk button to engage then you can take the panel off and there should be an alternate harness that you can swap with the one that is currently on the switch and that will allow the switch to engage without the ignition on. If you don't have access to your vehicle you will have to contact a taxi company or a tow truck company and ask if they provide a lock out service. Taxicabs offer a cheaper service in my area.

1996 Ford Crown Victoria 4.6L SFI 8cyl the Control Module-Ignition is located: Under hood, driver side, upper engine area, mounted on rear of fenderwell.

How to install a ignition switch in a 2000 crown victoria

The ignition switch is usually mounted to the steering column and is operated by a linkage rod.
NOTE On column-mounted ignition switches, don't confuse the switch with the lock cylinder and keys. The ignition switch is not normally visible. On some vehicles, the steering column support has to be removed and the column lowered to find the ignition switch. On others, the switch is accessible under the dash.

  • Remove the ignition switch wiring harness.
  • Unbolt it from its position.
  • Bolt the new switch into position.
  • Attach the witing harness.

My car wants to keep starting even after turning the key off

solenoid may be sticking. Have someone start the car, if it sticks tap the solenoid with screw driver handle. If that stops the starter, replace the solenoid. If it were me, I wouldn't bother testing it and just replace solenoid.
