I have an 2008 base level mustang - 6-banger with 49,000 miles. For the past few days the check engine light has been on, throwing off obd codes 171 and 174.; to lean a mix. have a bunch of options for this. Need to know most likely source of the codes...most commn fix? Fuel filter, MAFS, ? thanks in advance!

So if cleaning the MAF does not work, does that mean replacement? or do I need to get the codes cleared before I make that decision? not sure how the OBD works on mustang. on my honda it will clear itself.

Does that mean if cleaning the MAF does not work it needs replacement? I have not had the codes reset yet. Did not know if the mustang was like my honda and will turn codes off if working properly.?

Turned out to be clogged fuel filter. replaced, check light off, no codes from OBD.

Hi, DTCs P0171 and P0174 indicate air/fuel ratio is correcting rich for an overly lean condition. DTCs P0172 and P0175 indicate air/fuel ratio is correcting lean for an overly rich condition. Possible causes are:

  • Fuel system malfunction.
  • EGR system malfunction.
  • Air intake or vacuum system leak.
  • Engine oil level too high.
  • Incorrect cam timing.
  • Restricted air cleaner.
  • Faulty PCV system.
  • Excessive internal engine wear.
  • Inspect engine for obvious defects in specified systems.
Repair as necessary

MAF sensor is the most likely source of code....

Should I change the spark plugs based on time? Seven 7 yrs and 49,000 miles 04 Corolla.

Yes If it were me I would definitaly change them. A plug can go bad and cause a rough running engine and bad fuel milage. Even the 100,000 mile plugs I recomend changing around 60,000

Engine light 2005 mustang...why is it on??????

this is the check engine light, it is on to alert you to the fact that a fault has occurred in the engine electronic controls or the emission system, there are over 200 such poss faults, any time the check eng light is on a fault code is stored in the computers memory, have the system tested for that code and post it back here, many autozones do this for free, ask for an OBD 2 code test.

Horsecrap...go to an independent transmission dealer after you call the extended warranty folks and complain!
I can count the number of Honda transmissions that go bad before 300,000 miles on one hand.
Good Luck

Check engine light goes on for a few days and then resets itself

Sounds like a re-occuring temporary code....take it back to the dealer or Auto Zone and have the code scanned within your 6 start reset limit

2000 3.6L ford Mustang with TPS trouble code P0122

Make sure you installed the correct TP sensor. If so you may have a bad one. I have gotten bad "new" parts before. If all your problems started with the installed part start there.
