07 gmc savana rear disc will not release from parking brake shoes?

If parking brake is released
ther would be a build up of rust between shoes and internal drum edged
try to back up internal shoes and chip away rusted edged then they should come off

Need instructions for installing parking brake shoes on a 2001 Dodge 3500 pickup

This is a big job for such a small part. I suggest you repair/replace rotors, pads, and anything else back there while you are at it. You will need to remove both wheels on both sides, as well as the axles (I think). See my earlier post on Rear Rotor removal to see how this is done.

You will need a large spindle nut to remove the axles.

DISASSEMBLY:
Once you have access to the parking brakes inside the rotor hat:
1. Lock out the parking brake w/a pair of Vise grips (on the parking brake cable under the cab)
2. Disengage teh park brake cable from behind the rotor assembly to allow easier disassembly of the parking brake shoes.
3. Disassemble the rear park brake shoes.

REASSEMBLY:
1. Reassemble the rear parking brake shoes. This is a typical, small brake drum configuration. Do one side at a time - so you can see how to reassemble each small part. Keep the springs and parts oriented the same: front to front and interior to interior, etc.
2. Release the parking brake cable
3. Install the disc brake rotor(s)
4. Install the disc brake caliper(s)
5. Install tire & wheel assembly
6. Lower the vehicle

Parking Brake

With the parking brake released go under the car and trace the parking brake cable s all the way the the rear brakes. If no problem is found jack the rear of the car up and remove the rear wheels. Remove the brake drums (you might have to insert a brake tool or screwdriver and loosten the adjustment in order to get the drums off. Inspect both brake systems for problems. If you drove through water on your last trip and the car was parked for several days the rear shoes sometimes get stuck to the drums because of rust. Water on the shoes can also cause the automatic adjustors to over tighten the shoes and adjusting the tension with the brake tool or screwdriver will correct it. Most of the time the adjustment slot is on the backplate at the bottom and has a small rectangular rubber plug you have to remove to make the adjustment. Some of the newer vehicles have the adjustment on the front of the drum and is a round hole which must be near the top to reach the adjustor.

tim, I'm not sure if you have rear disc or drum brakes, but this is usually a caliper or brake cylinder (at the wheel) problem. If you have drum brakes, check for any problems like broken springs on the shoes, which would result in parts floating around, and brakes not releasing properly. The same for disc brakes, make sure nothing has become loose (mounting pins for caliper). If you find it is a brake cyl/caliper problem, you will need to rebuild or replace it. Make sure you bleed the brakes for the entire system (you want to flush out the system to prevent further problems), as old brake fluid can become contaminated (brake fluid absorbs water, which corrodes calipers and brake cylinders, leading to failure of those components). Last, make sure it isn't a parking brake that is not releasing. Parking brake cables corrode from exposure to the elements and can bind up, causing the brakes to drag. Use something like WD-40 on the cables to keep them operating correctly.

Emergency brake adjustment

I have a 2000 4x4 expedition and the parking brake has its own set of shoes. They are located behind the rear disc rotor. You have to remove them to get to the shoes. You will have to release the parking brake to get the rear rotors off.

Tightening parking brake for 2001 GMC Jimmy

Hi... to adjust rear brakes providing the shoes are good... just drive vehicle in reverse and pump brakes... rear shoes are self adjusting so they should "adjust" themselves... after doing this test by putting on park brake, put vehicle in drive and see if vehicle moves forward, repeat procedure if necessary. Hope this helps... please rate suggestion.... ty

How to adjust the parking brake on a 2006 GMC savana, 3500?

there is an adjustment bolt just in front of the rear wheel well on the drivers side. Look for where one cable splits into two cables.



Underneath your vehicle, a steel threaded cable comes from the back of one hub and is joined by a short cable from the other hub--then the original cable runs to a threaded end with an adjuster nut in it--and one smaller nut on the end outside of that--(this is the equalizer bar)--you'll see it real close to your transmission.
You might have to jack-up the back of the vehicle???
Pull the parking brake lever up sharply and then release it. Pull the parking brake lever to the second click and leave it there. You're looking for a slight drag of the brake shoes when you spin the wheels. To increase the drag, get under at the equalizer bar and turn the adjusting nut to take up the slack in the cables. Get out and spin the rear wheels if you think it's to tight. I will say don't be afraid to crank on it for a while as in this case, a little adjustment really does not go a long way. When you think you have the drag right, go back in the car and pull the brake up the the fourth click. At this point the wheels should be locked and you should not be able to turn them even when trying hard. If you can, tighten them up a little more. Once you've done this, release the brake and make sure the wheels spin freely. If they are still binding due to the parking brake, back off the adjustment a little. And that's basically the whole adjustment procedure.

Park Brake Shoe Adjustment

Caution: Refer to Brake Dust Caution.

Important: The park brake shoes must be adjusted before the park brake cable tension is adjusted.Set the J 21177-A so it contacts the inside diameter of the rotor
  1. Position the J 21177-A over the shoe and the lining at the widest point.
  2. Turn the adjuster nut until the lining just contacts the J 21177-A. Park brake shoe to brake rotor clearance: 0.6604 mm (0.026 in)
  3. Repeat steps 1-3 for the opposite side.
Park Brake Cable Tension Adjustment

Important: Before you adjust the park brake cable tension, verify that the park brake shoes are adjusted to provide a clearance of 0.6604 mm (0.026 in) and the rear disc brake rotors are installed.

  1. Verify the self adjuster lock-out pin has been removed.
  2. Fully apply and release the park brake pedal 3 times.

Parking brake pedal goes to floor

Hello;
The parking brake cables may be stretched and in need of adjustment. Follow the cables along to a nut. Then you can tighten the adjusters up on both sides until you have the proper tension. Also make certain none of the brackets are bent or broken that the cables ride through.

you probably have the parking brake set, in which case the drum cannot be removed. release the parking brake
