Question about 2002 Saab 9-5

Open Question

Saab 9.5 2.2 tid 2004. The problem started with black smoke when driving more so under acceleration. Had car checked and exhaust cleaned out and was told it was showing a fault with the mass airflow meter but when it's unplugged it stops smoking but won't rev over 3000rpm and is very slow to pick up speed. So i changed the meter but it still smoked and was lumpy at changing gear (automatic) I then cleaned the egr valve and throttle housing which were very dirty i think due to driving with the air meter unplugged. then tried it again but still has this lumpy gear change.engine light is still on and showing one fault. Hope you can help me with this annoying bloody car. Regards. Murbo.

2002 VW 1.9tdi engine lacks power and emits black exhaust smoke. What is likely cause?

If it isn't a dirty, blocked air filter, the EGR is always a firm suspect (Exhaust Gas Recycler). The EGR recycles a limited amount of exhaust gases and can become quite gummed up with soot and oil.

The Saab 2.2 tid suffers from this big style. Cleaning - takes about 30-45 minutes - usually solves the problem.

I wouldn't imagine that cleaning your VW EGR will take long or be too difficult. Have a look on the following link:

Hi, I have Saab 9-3 1.9 TID 150 with 113,000 on clock.

Crank and no start. Study these pages and you may be able to identify your problem.......
Crank No Start

It should not be blowing smoke though. Can you advise the colour of the smoke from the exhaust?

If the smoke was whitish in colour this indicates there is coolant leaking into one or more of the combustion chambers which is a bad sign. You did mention the engine was misfiring which is possibly indicative of low compression due to a combustion leak.
If there is coolant leaking into the cylinder(s) this will be via a failed head gasket or a crack in the cylinder head or both.

2002 Saab 9-5, 2.3t smokes when leaving the accelerator

The valve stem oil seals require replacement.
This repair can usually be performed without removing the head from the engine, so it should not cost too much.
