Check a shop repair, I don't believe your timing belt IS adjustable. Most timming "belts" operate with a mechanical tensioner and either your belt is worn out or something has gone afoul with the tensioner (not uncommon). Anyway you are looking at a time consumming parts. Shops usually get $300 to $500 for this little chore. Hope you have a friend that is mechanically inclined. Good Luck

Having problems with timing belt and timing on '88 pathfinder. im no idiot, 8+ yrs in service. runs but runs like ****. please, any info would be awesome.


did you see if the belt is off by one tooth? I have made that mistake before. Did the belt break while it was running ? Is it a contact motor? If so do a compression test .

I get power up to the cap and nothing out to the plugs its a 1988 pathfinder


try replacing the rotor arm, also if it has contacts try replacing them as well or adjust them..ifthat dosent solve it, replace the plug leads..hope that helps

Timing belt mark on 1988 pathfinder


this is one of those things where a good after market repair manual is handy. if its a v-6 the right bank lines up on the marks but the marks on the left bank are only there to get you close. you have to literaly count the number of teeth on the belt.also at the age of your car the manual will probably be a good investment.

BAD ALTERNATOR.. needs to be replace, before you do that make sure that belt on alternator is in place(not Missing) Good Luck
