How do u check coolant cold. The manual says running temp but I don't want to burn my nose in the dark just trying to see the level with flash light.

What type of vehicle do you have John,om your overflow coolant tank, should have two levels, hot and cold,if the tank is empty, then remove radiator cap and see how much is in radiator, add if low then put cap back on,then add to your overflow tank, plus you have a leak somewhere, may be your water pump is leaking, find the water pump, crawl under vehicle and see if fluid is leaking their.Do all this when engine is cold.

Car keeps over heating and sputters installed new thermostat flushed coolant what else could it be,sensor?

You need to check coolant circulation and coolant temperature. Also check for active bubbles in coolant even cold. Its possible there is poor coolant flow, poor cooling of the coolant, or the head or gasket have been damaged and are allowing compression to escape into the cooling system and superheat it. This will be seen as greay steaming bubbles floating up in the radiator or overflow tank and popping despite the fact the tank or radiator is full and not that hot, the bubbles will be steam pockets escaping as air and extremely scalding! (Danger!).

The tools Id use are a IR temo gun to check actual coolant temp and possibly temp across the hoses and the radiator itself. Then you want to verify all cooling components (fans, shrouds, thermostat, water pump(s)) are all doing their jobs. If all that checks out and system is full and holds pressure, youll wanna check internal engine leaks making temperature go high.

Does the fan turn freely in your hand? possibly a faulty thermostat on the radiator or the water pump isn't working (your car would probably be dead)

Ford Ranger overflow tank bubbling and overflowing, running hot, white smoke, after water pump failure.

The smoke could be the water boiling. Although it is possible that you blew the head gasket, if the vehicle overheated badly, It is also possible that you still have some air in the system. Replace the thermostat and seal /gasket and run the vehicle while adding coolant. Do not install cap on until both houses upper and lower are hot to the touch. This is an indication that the thermostat opened and coolant is actually circulating. Good luck.

Where is filler for radiator

You have overflow tank. There is no radiator cap on that Golf. So you will add required coolant to overflow tank. Check markings on it, if cold you have a mark if hot you have another mark on tank. add accordingly.
