sound like glow plugs not working. during start up diesel engines need preheat ignition cylinder before fuel can injected and burn if glow plugs not working diesel engine wont fire.do you see glow plug turn on when first start engine.
When your glow plug light goes out wait for 10 seconds and then try start it from cold cause power still going too plugs even though light on dash has gone out
sounds like a glow plug problem,if it starts o.k. when warm, but not when cold, does it smoke a lot when trying to start it cold,if so i would say your glow plugs are either burned out or theres no power to them when you turn on the key,do you see the glow plug light on the dash,it may light, but that doesn,t mean the glow plugs are getting power
Typically, the glow plug light not coming on indicates that you have some bad plugs or poor connection. You need to replace the plugs and check the wire connections.
It is interesting how picky diesels are when they aren't warm.
Hope this helps.
A glow plug is a small heating element in the cylinder. It heats the diesel so that starting can be made easy. Is your car standing in the open frozen parking If yes, then it would require a lot of battery power to first heat all the cylinders and then turn the engine to start. What we do in such conditions is to light up some fire under the car and heat the fuel system enough for the diesel to warm up a little and thus save the battery for glow plugs. Generally, all vehicles have an indicator light which comes on when the glow plugs are ready for starting. The diesel will ignite on compression, but it has to reach the cylinder and thus has to be flowing. In cold it freezes and hence the need for glow plugs and the heat. If it is parked in heated parking then the need for glow plugs decreases.
Ok well the glow plugs on a diesel have nothing to do with the engine firing. All the glow plugs do is heat up the combusion chamber on cold starts. Diesel engines fire using high compression. An oxygen sensor won't cause the vehicle to not start and your diesel doesn't have one of those anyways. It could be a fuel related issue. (pump, line, pressure etc.) Have you it scanned for engine DTC's? But based on your knowledge of your diesel vehicle i'm going to suggest you take it to a shop.
HELLO THERE: Diesel engines work under heat of compression meaning that when the fuel is injected into the cylinder and is compressed during the compression stroke in the cylinder it heats up untill it fires. If the engine is now starting and you are letting the glow plug on for the reccommended amount of time than yes i would consider getting a glow plug that has a higher temperature range on it. also you can get fuel heaters this is what we use on all of our big rigs they are better know as pre heaters they work very well when the temperatures are very cold and of course a block heater works well too ok I hope that this is very helpful for you. Best regards michael
have you fixed this problem? if not ,here we go ,hj6ocruiser had 4lt a,2h engine if you have a 4.2 ltr engine in yours it will be ,a 1hz motor and a bugger of a job to fit(i have only done one and even though i have been asked i wont do another) the point being ,with out modification the 2 glow systems are not compat able the early 2h had 11 volt glow plugs then they went to 6 volt with a largeglowplug in the manifold (manifold heater) the 2h did chnge to the superglow system but not untill 1995 (in australia anyway) if you did not change the timer you will find you burn out glow plug s pretti regularly. if you brought it to me ,iwould remove, check and re place (where necessary)all the glow plugs and the manifold heater .then run an independant 12 volt wire, after disconecting the existing feed to the manifold probe, the new wire runs through an
independant switch fitted on the dash board to the manifoldheater.there
is no doubt in my mind that this is the soplution to your problem----- the quick fix is asquirt of aerostart into the air cleaner as you co to turn her over or else loosen the wingnut on top of the air cleaner a teaspoon or so of petrol at wingnut and fire her up, aerostartis best ,if you can let me know how you get on i`d appreciate it youdoit
