Hi there just replacing the cambelt have got the crank at TDC but where r the marks on the camshafts surpost to go?? thanks

Very closely examine the engine block in the area immediate to the perimeter of the cam gear you will probably find an arrow CAST into the block, simply point the two arrows at each other. A good way to double check yourself is to pull the valve/cam covers and be sure that both the valves on number one cyl are closed at this time and the intake valve on the next in the firing order is closing and theintake valve on the third is opening or wide open (point of lobe on tip of valve stem. Hi, noticed a post of yours rear cambelt replacement on an a4 1.9 tdi ajm year 2000. Would be very grateful for any instructions. The car is stripped down ready for cambelt removing. Stuck on lining up...


Hi, I have pasted instructions below from autozone.com. The instructions call for the use of special tools. You can improvise with alternate tools, but please make sure your timing is right before closing the cover. Please let me know if you have questions, and thanks for using FixYa.

1.9L Diesel Engine
Some special tools are required to perform this procedure properly. A flat bar, VW tool 2065A is used to secure the camshaft in position. A pin, VW tool 2064 is used to fix the pump position while the timing belt is removed. The camshaft and pump work against spring pressure and will move out of position when the timing belt is removed. It is not difficult to find substitutes but do not remove the timing belt without these tools.

WARNING Do not turn the engine or camshaft with the timing belt removed. The pistons will contact the valves and cause internal engine damage.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the accessory drive belts, crankshaft pulley and the timing belt cover(s). Remove the camshaft cover and rubber plug at the back end of the camshaft.
  2. Temporarily reinstall the crankshaft pulley bolt and turn the crankshaft to Top Dead Center (TDC) of No. 1 piston. The mark on the camshaft sprocket should be aligned with the mark on the inner timing belt cover or the edge of the cylinder head.
  3. With the engine at TDC, insert the bar into the slot at the back of the camshaft. The bar rests on the cylinder head to will hold the camshaft in position.
  4. Insert the pin into the injection pump drive sprocket to hold the pump in position.
  5. Loosen the locknut on the tensioner pulley and turn the tensioner counterclockwise to relieve the tension on the timing belt. Slide the timing belt from the sprockets.

To install:
  1. Install the new timing belt and adjust the tension so the belt can be twisted 45 degrees at the halfway point between the camshaft and pump sprockets. Tighten the tensioner nut to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  2. Remove the holding tools.
  3. Turn the engine 2 full revolutions to return to TDC for the No. 1 cylinder. Recheck belt tension and timing mark alignment, readjust as required.
  4. Install the belt cover and accessory drive belts.
    NOTE If the belt is too tight, there will be a growling noise that rises and falls with engine speed.

Got audi a4 1996 diesel need to change cambelt but


A diesel uses a different procedure. You'll need a tool to hold the camshaft pulley parallel to the top of the cylinder head. The timing mark to set TDC for piston #1 is located on top of bell housing. The pointer must be aligned on the diamond cut on the flywheel. A VW/Audi setting bar tool #2065A is needed to lock the camshaft in position. Lock the injection pumpin position using the special lock pin (VW/Audi special tool no. 2064). Caution: If the drive belt is broken or has jumped time, do not attempt to lock the sprocket at this time!!! You will also need VW/Audi special tool no. VW210 to measure belt tension between camshaft sproket and injection pump sprocket. So good luck.

hi from uk have done this lots of times when renewing cambelts etc and found that if you turn engine to TDC No1 firing and check to see if hole on cam cog is facing up/top in line with V cut mark on cyl head behind you can remove top cover to check ? if after you have removed under arch cover to access crank pully bolt ? i have/do use an impact gun with socket+extension on pully bolt these impact guns are 12 volt and are usually used on wheel nuts power supply from either battery or cig lighter socket the gun actually spins fast then suddenly impacts bolts or nuts easily cost in uk £25 approx and can be money well invested for variety of jobs also using this for crank bolt no need for special locking tools just undo bolt on pully then reckeck t/marks are aligned b4 stripdown hope this helps ? you may know somebody who got one for christmas ???

Timig belt replcement where are the markings for the timing belt for a 2000 accet on the camshaft


hi from uk the camshaft cog has a small hole drillinh between the outer toothed and central securing bolt at TDC number 1 cyl this hole must be at top of cog 12-oclock position ? at this point if you use a mirror and view through this drilled hole you will see a V cut in cyl head at this point cam is TDC number 1 cyl firing assume you have crankshaft lined up already ? if you need to rotate the camshaft to align marks ? turn crank back a fw degrees then you will be able to rotate cam without valve contact with pistons then reset crank marks up make sure belt is fitted from crank in anticlockwise rotation hope this helps ?

Crancshaft pullt jamming up


You must have #1 on TDC and the camshafts on the timing mark to fit a new belt , I rekon yer valves are fouling the piston .
Ignore the mark on the pump pulley .

Settings to replace cam belt


There should be marks stamped into the cam and crank gears that need to line up with corresponding marks on the backing plate before you remove the cambelt.

If there are no markings, you need to make your own.

Rotate crank until at TDC (reinstall the crank drivebelt pulley loosely and front cover to do this, then take them off again)

Once at TDC, use correction fluid and mark the crank position twice - once on the crank gear itself and a corresponding mark on the backing plate.

Ditto for the cam gear.

Make sure these marks are aligned when cambelt is replaced, turn engine one full revolution when new cambelt is on to double check marks line up where they should and you're good to go.

Sometimes the cam isn't marked but the crank gear is. In that case line up the crank gear and use the above step to mark the cam gear.

Be precise as the cam gear will most likely move when you take the cambelt off due to tension from the cam on the rockers
