I am thinking about buy a 1988 vw golf and I was just wondering how common it is for the fuel injector to break. Also I was wondering how difficult it is to tune the engine. Does the bently guide explain how to tune the engine?

Re: Tuning and fuel injectors
About the only real fuel related problems I've seen with mine is the fuel pump going out. Tune ups are rather easy. A Bentley Manual will tell you all you need to know about the car. They are extremely detailed and well worth the money.

THE 1988 TO 1989 TRUCKS HAD THROTTLE BODY FUEL INJECTION. $1500.00 IS TOO MUCH FOR FUEL INJECTORS.THE FUEL INJECTORS ON TOP OF INTAKE UNDER THE AIR CLEANER.IT WOULD BE CHEAPER FOR YOU TO BUY THE 2 FUEL INJECTORS PUT THEM IN YOUR SELF.FIRST BUY A REPAIR MANUAL.YOU WILL NEED IT AS A GUIDE.BECAUSE FUEL SYSTEM IS UNDER PRESSURE THE MANUAL WILL TELL YOU HOW TO RELIEF FUEL PRESSURE BEFORE WORKING ON THE FUEL SYSTEM.
Had the same problem on my 2008 golf 1.9 TDI. Hooked up to a diagnostic machine problem showed up as injector breaking down. Common problem on golf where the harness on the injector becomes loose easy fix. Worse case scenario you may need new injector not expensive
you dont say what miles the car has done.but you should now be using semi synthetic 20/50 oil and try using a fuel additive(redex/wynns)to clean the injectors.if you are using oil it is possible that the engine has lost some of its compression due to ring/valve wear.did you know that to convert your engine to a 130/150bhp unit, you only need to change the ecu try"diesel tuning"website.....
SOUND LIKE YOUR FUEL INJECTORS CLOGGED.FILL UP FUEL TANK.PUT A BOTTLE OF FUEL INJECTOR CLEANER IN FUEL TANK.DRIVE A FEW MILES SO THE CLEANER CAN FLUSH OUT DIRTY INJECTORS.THIS SHOULD HELP.IF PROBLEM STILL EXIST.HAVE IT SCANNED.
fuel relay could be faulty. i think its number 30 or 167 in the fuse box under the driver side steering. it could also be the fuel pump or connector on the fuel pump under the black metal plate under your trunk carpet. you could try manually throwing in fuel into the intake to make sure its not your car's ecu or ignition system. if it starts and stays running it could be what took me a few months to discover after i had intermittent problems. there a small vacuum hose from the fifth injector on a 1997 mk3 gti (4 cylinder) that connects to the injector rail. i think its some kind of activation for the electronic injectors. my pipe was broken and i just cut it and my car hasnt been better since! i know this is an old question but i hope it helps someone out there!
