Sounds like a bad sending unit. if the check engine light is on and you get a code of p0463 then you have a bad sending unit.

Fuel gage is not working

Had the same problem with my 05 malibu. Change your fuel pump cus the pump, fuel filter and fuel gauge sending unit are all one piece. A good indication is that after fueling the gauge will go to full, drive 2-5 miles and drops to empty. If the gauge is totaly unresponsive, check the ground.

Need to replace the sensor inside the gas tank. I have a 2008 Malibu with the same problem. It was a faulty fuel gauge sensor.

Just had a new fuel pump installed in 2002 Chevy Malibu. Worked great for about a week and then the fuel gauge started reading "empty" when the car has a full tank of gas. What happened?

Mine too! I have a 2007 Chevy Malibu also and I knoticed it does that or bounces up and down once my tank gets to half full. Have you found a solution? Sometimes my check engine light comes on and sometimes it doesn't.

Fuel guage not working correctly

your gauge is part of the integrated unit in the fuel pump module

Gas guage no longer works when below half a tank.

You are probably looking at dropping the fuel tank down and removing the float and sending unit ( all in one unit). Once it's taken apart, you may see that you can fix it or you may have to replace it.

P0171 and p0463

Replace the fuel pump module (inside the fuel tank) it has 2 level sensors on it. The po463 code is an open condition on the high level sensor, one sensor reports to the ECM, other to your gas gauge on the dash.
