Question about 1996 Ford Contour

1 Answer

On my 1996 Ford Contour. The alternator is charging at 14.8 and i replaces 2 batteries. The battery goes down to almost dead overnight. I unhooked the positive cable and put my fluke volt meter between the positive cable and the positive post. It shows a draw at 14.5 volts. I unplugged every fuse inside and out one at a time but it did not dropped much. i even pulled the relays. i unhooked the alternator to see if it was feeding back through the regulator but the draw did not change. Any suggestions? Please help!

No. I did all without it running. It is drawing the full voltage of the battery. I'll use a car tail light bulb. One othe thing this car didn't have any problems until my sister slid off the interstate 80 into a deep snowy ditch and had to be winched out. A shop had to beat the snow out of the engine compartment and suppencion. Could they have caused yhe ground?

i used a 12v bulb and couldn't get a draw. I don't know if all the wires. plugs and other things i jiggled might have fixed it. I hook back up the battery and now only time will tell me if it is still drawing. I appreciate your help. it helped me out a lot. Thanks. Ranky

Hi, it is difficult to measure the draw in voltage. It is obviously best to measure amps. A better way to do this, assuming you don't have a high current ammeter, is to use a test light. The brightness of the test light connected between the battery and the cable indicates the amperage of the draw. With the test light in place, try removing the fuses again. If none of the fuses will extinguish the light or dim it significantly, the draw has to be on an unfused circuit. I will look up your wiring diagram to find the unfused circuits and add that information in a few minutes.

There are a bunch of fuse links. I don't know if these are in the wires or the little boxed ones in the fuse box. The headlight switch is on a fuse link unless you have DRL. The alternator stator is also on a 20 amp fuse link. There are 5 relays that are on fuse links: high beams, low beams, 2 cooling fan relays, and the PCM relay. Finally, the starter relay is completely unfused.

by the way, there is no need to run these tests with the engine running. When you say you're getting 14.8 volts, I assume you have the engine running. Since the draw happens with the key off, that is how I would do the checks.

If the fusebox or power distribution center was damaged in the accident or subsequent snow removal, I would definitely look under it to see if maybe something was shifted such as to connect relay terminals or otherwise activate circuits that should only come on with the the ignition switched on. It's really hard to say how this incident would have caused the issue, though I'm pretty sure once you find it we will all say "yep, that's what happened"

Please run that test again with the bulb to see if any fuse or relay will dim the bulb when pulled out. If we can narrow this down to a fuse circuit, it will be much easier to figure out where to look for the draw.

Hooked up my new battery backwards, blew the main fuse. It has been replaced and now the meter fuse in the inside fuse box blows within seconds and gage cluster and alternator not working

Could have damaged regulator. When the car is running have you checked the voltage at battery terminals. If battery is charging it should be around 14 volts. If around 12 your charging system is fubar.

Meanwhile if you have to charge the car every day then something in the car is draining the battery, Using an ammeter you need to track it down, Hook it up to battery and pull fuse out one at a time till the drain goes down. That isolates the circuit with the problem.

1997 saturn replaced battery(new) dead in 2 days...car will start with a boost...but will run only for awhile until completely dead battery...alternator replaced(rebuilt)..no lights have been left on...

When the car is running check the voltage at the battery. You should see 14 volts. If you see around 12 volts or less the alternator is not charging.

Draining Battery on 1996 Ford Contour

you will need to do a test with a battery light disconnect the negative wire on the battery and connect one end of the test light to the battery and the other to the terminal with everything switched off if the test light is lit you have a draw if it is not lit then it is something else sometimes door switches and glove box switches wear out and need added lift to properly shut the open circuit down

Contour 1996

Jumper cables have two colored cables. The red one goes from your vehicle positive battery terminal (+) to the other cars positive terminal (+)

The black goes from your negative terminal(-) to the other cars negative terminal (-)
Your car should start within 5 to 10 minutes if you have good connections.
Get your charging system checked to see if your battery is bad, or your car charging system is not working.

Normal charging volts are about 14.5, 13 volts is too low. The spec from Ford is 14.1 to 14.7. Broken wires or a bad connection are common.,
