Hello beav_kimberl,

The torque is a four stage process:

1. First pass torque all bolt in the sequence shown below to 22 ft.lbs.
2. Tighten bolts 1,4,5,8 and 9 an additional 75 degrees.
3. Tighten bolts 12 an 13 an additional 65 degrees.
4. Tighten bolts 2,3,6,7,10 and 11 an additional 55 degrees.
I hope this helps.

HOW HARD IS IT TO REPLACE A HEAD GASKET ON A 2002 4 CYLINDER GMC SONOMA?

its not hard, but you need the right tools, procedures, you need to know what you are doing. You also need to repair why the head gasket is blown. You will need the head checked out at a machine shop, it may be warped.

Since it is just one cylinder I would not suspect the head gasket or rings to be worn out. You more than likley have a bad exhaust valve.

Not trying to be a smart-A but you really need to take it to a well trusted repair shop . Head-work has to be done and head bolts replaced (NEW) and the head or heads propperly torqued

Not that tough but time consuming and a lot of things to remove. You need to buy you a Haynes repair manual or Mitchel manual at your parts store. They are written in laymen terms and easy to understand and they will give you the torque values to re-torque your head bolts once you get to that stage.

the 2.2 engine top bolts from left to right is 8-4-1-5-9-your bottom bolts left to right is 7-3-2-6-10 this is your torque sequence.you need to use bolt thread sealer.wait 15 minutes before putting bolts in. you torque 46 ft lbs long bolts 43 ft lbs for short bolts.then you make second pass on all bolts tighten them additional 90 degrees using a torque angle meter.
