How would I know if the rack was to be replaced. When I was driving it last my steering wheel wouldnt turn at all. Put lucas stop leak in and it would run out as soon as I start the car. It looked like it was leaking from a boot at the bottom.

Check your power steering pump, I'm betting if you look at your fluid level (power steering fluid) you'd find its low or bubbling while your turning the steering. I strongly believe the pump is has cavitation and needs replacing. Didnt your mechanic look at this before changing the rack ??? Check the rack seals again and the steering pump. Its the only thing that can cause it. Unfortunately if you dont have experience in changing the pump DO NOT attempt to yourself, you wont want your pump to cavitate and lock up the rack while your doing 150 mph ..

once you find leaks from the rack or you find the steering not moving propperly its a problem with the rack. There are 2 ways to fix that. 1 Replace the rack, 2.) with a rack kit, and change all the seals in the rack which is called rebuilding the rack. Most often people replace it case its easier and mechanic makes more money. If you replaced your rack then the last thing is the power steering pump.

Now from what your saying the leak could be from the rack and it also could be from the pump. Ensure the leak is from the rack and replace it. Now the wheel wont move at all thats diffidently the sign of a cavitation rack seal. Replace the rack dont rebuild it, I'm thinking yours is already cutting.

once the wheel dont move your sure its the rack,, all the pump will do is cause it to get hard. but the rack on the other hand seizes the entire system.

Why is the steering on my 77 MGB ao stiff and hard to steer that it is unsafe? i have rebuilt the front end replaced the rack and pinion steering also?

Hello there.
If you jack the front wheels off the ground and disconnect the track control (steering) arms from the Rack, then it should be easy to narrow down by moving the parts whether it is either supspension on one of the sides or the only other thing you have not changed which is the Steering Column. It cant Logically be anthing else !

Power steering is stiff on 2000 jimmy 4wd and steering is hard control in shelter belts when windy

First check power steering fluid level and if its full then most likely the power rack and pinion will need to be replaced.

Steering is stiff & difficult during turns.have used power steering fluid.2001 suzuki vitara xl7 v6 4dr

Its either the power steering pump, or the rack & pinion, (steering gear). It is only going to get worse, and maybe even dangerous, as the steering will jam and not turn. Have it inspected by someone you trust....soon! If it is the rack & pinion it may cost around $500 to have it replaced. Make sure that price includes the required front-end alignment. It will drive like new afterwards!!

My toyota camry steering went very stiff

Unless the rack and pinion gears are slipping (jumping a cog), then try putting oil on the universal joint in the steering column just above the rack & pinion. Two mechanics wanted to change the rack & pinion for $900 or the "Yoke" (whatever that is) but a generous squirt of oil on the U jont fixed the problem for my 2002 Camry!

Steering is very stiff. I have bled the lines and replaced the fluid. Started doing it just now and then and now it does it all the time would it be my pump?

why did you replace the fluid? it could be the pump, but pressure needs to be checked. when you turn steering wheel all the way to the stop, it should whine somewhat. Make sure the belt is tight.

Power steering

Sounds like a bad steering rack & pinion assembly... is it only bad in one direction or both...?
If both then it's the rack assembly... Hope this helps...;-)
