Question about Dodge Intrepid

1 Answer

I bought a 96 dodge intrepid 3.5 v6 car that ran great except it was leaking oil from somewhere on the front bottom left hand side of the engine checked everything and put power steering fluid cause it was low i drove it like that for about a month and it drove fine i noticed though that the power steering fluid would constantly be low so i figured that was the oil it was leaking any how one day my boyfriend noticed that there was some little plugs or hoses disconnected so he connected them were he thought they went car ran even better it seemed until the next day i was on the freeway and the car lost power and stalled i believe i ran out of gas cause i was low on it so i had some gas brought to me and put it in the car turned on just fine but started running slow and wanting to stall it started to make a clicking noise and the oil light started to come on and off on the dash so i added some motor oil but that did not take away the noise i made it home like that and i drove it little more that day thinking the noise would go away but it didnt it started to turn off when i came to a stop and it also lost more power and started to make avery loud clicking and knocking noise i mean a very horriffic loud noise so i went through 2 mechanics and the very first thing they said as soon as i turned the car on was oohh thats it the whole engine needs to be replaced but if that were true would the car still turn on and still run? i means it runs poorly and turns off as you come to a stop but it runs while the engine is still cold once its warmed up it will turn off and hesitate to turn back on along with the very loud noise. i dont understand the car was running great how could it hapen from one day to the next?

It sounds like the car was ran out of oil.The engine bearings and crankshaft journal are probably scarred. The noise you are hearing is more than likely a piston rod slapping around about to break loose from the crankshaft. So,yes the engine is toast...Sorry..Good Luck!!!

2003 dodge Intrepid 2.7l oil leak above rear main seal after running 20 minutes

rear main seal usually only leaks when the car is running. though oil will slowy drip off afterwards. now the best way to tell is to remove the heat sheild that covers the flywheel and look at it and at the flywheel . is the oil only on the engine side of the cover or is it inside the cover and on the fly wheel. the rear main seal will leak into the bellhousing and on the fly wheel the oil pan gasket will leak on the front of the heat sheild.

Engine is overheating and I believe I can taste antifreeze in the engine oil we drained. We only drained a small amount.

One way to test for sure if there is antifreeze in your oil (and avoiding ingesting poisonous ethylene gylcol) is by placing a drop of oil on a hot exhaust manifold. If it boils, there is a antifreeze leak. Similarly, if you can light the oil on fire with a hand lighter, there is a gas leak as well. If you find antifreeze, you can try using a florescent dye to track the leak to its source.

DODGE INTREPID

They are pretty reliable. Transmissions sometimes have problems and battery changing, etc isnt easy. I have had 2 concordes and 2 intrepids, as well as a van from chrysler and for the most part they are fine except the transmissions. have had to change the transmission in 2 of the cars and the van (which takes a different one). Engines are good if taken care of. Rick

How do i replace the tensioner pulley on a 1995 intrepid 3.3L v6

Tensioner pulley can be loosened by getting underneath passenger side of the engine compartment.
You will see two bolts. The one in back of pulley should be loosened first, then the bottom bolt which relieves the belt should guide you the rest of the way.

1993 chev. cavalier RS convt. has oil leak somewhere

this being a side mounted 3.1 liter (v6) the front of the engine would be on the right side of the car from the driver's perspective. if the oil is coming from that side cocentrate your pinpointin there, make sure it is not one of the valve cover gaskets and oil is running down from the top (common) and making pinpoiinting the leak difficult because it tends to spreak on its way down. Seals tand to leak more when the engine is running, so you may have to run it while parked for a little while and check for the leak. It may be the crankshaft seal if it is localized to below the crankshaft; Or if it is coming out of the timing cover then it may be the camshaft seal of the lower intake seal. Intake seal leakes are next to valve cover gasket leak the most common on those engine. Update us. Good luck.
