Question about 1986 Volkswagen Wagon Camper
OK, call me blonde but I can't find the battery in my van. Looked in the engine compartment where the manual said it should be and there isn't one so I'm at a loss. (The website forced my selection of product to 1986 - that's not correct)
The battery should be under the front passenger seat. Move the seat forward as far as it will go, and you'll see a metal plate (may be under the carpet), which comes off with four Phillips screws. To actually get the battery out, you will need to remove the seat.

A prior owner may have moved it. The 76 should have the battery in the engine compartment on the right side. If it's a camper, try looking under the rear bench seat.
Otherwise, following the heavy cable from the starter would be the best bet.

Back then VW was pretty darn good at hidding the battery. I would try lifting the rear seat bottoms. That is where they usually hide the battery. If it is not there, try opening the engine compartment and follow the thick wires from the starter, or alternator. It is most likelylocated near the back of the van, on the inside, below the rear window.
