Fuel filter could be clogged, getting just enough gas to carb.
also check for leaks in line where air can get in.

Engine Problem

first thing that comes to mind would be the throttle positioning sensor, or the mass air flow intake sensor on the air intake hose assembly.Symptoms of a mass airflow intake sensor would be very poor acceleration or engine dying when gas pedal is mashed hard. Throttle positioning sensor can give you and irradical idle while sitting still. You might want to have a scan to diagnose the problem.

I have a 1995 saturn sl1. when i push the clutch in it idles up to about 3k rpms. then it tries to dies. if it does die, i have too hold the gas pedal to the floor to start it again. any suggestions?

You know I had that problem on a 94SW, and replaced the Mass Air Flow doodad and the crank position sensor and that fixed it. Cannot tell you which item was the right one, neither are very expensive. My car however also had a gas odor to it indicating incomplete combustion.

Need firing order diagram for 1998 saturn 1.9 engine

Firing order is 1-3-4-2 with #1 closest to the passenger side of the car.

#1 and #4 fire off the passenger side coil, and #2 and #3 connect to the driver side coil.

99 saturn will carnk but won't start

try cranking engine while holding gas pedal to the floor, this turns off the fuel injectors to clear excess fuel from cyls. eng my just be flooded. may need to crank for a long time. if engine starts do not let off gas until you are sure eng will run on its own.

98 saturn it won't start when the engine is cold i have to put the gas peddle to the floor while I turn the key till it starts. when it does start I get large cloud of blue smoke. once the engine is warm...

Replace The Throttle Positioning Sensor...When you put Accelerator to the floor ... It rolls the Position Sensor Cam to tell computer etc to put Injectors Etc..into cold start mode...as soon as the motor fires..injectors take over and do their job..The Black smoke is the Extra Gas Put it cylinders to Purge it in a cold Start Mode...Throttle Positioning Sensor..and Yes You Can do It.!!! AutoZone-O'Reillys Etc..Easy Fix !! And Remember Castrol GTX-5-30/ 10-30 !!!
For God Sakes DO NOT Run 5-20 Or 20-50 Tooo Thin- Tooo Thick !! -Thanks-Matthew
