The on / off blinking light is the overdrive light, once this is blinking it means your Park ?neutral switch is shorting out. If this is so it means that the trany solenoid keeps tripping from on / off causing the problem your having. Replace your park neutral switch on the transmission. Now this is kinda of easy so you dont really need a mechanic, unless your unsure about it in which case get one.

This is what the switch looks like

Its on the transmission, Unbolt it, lift it up, unjack it, replace it.

WAIT!!! i forgot some vehicles have the overdrive switch seperately,, it looks like thishttp://www.google.tt/imgres?imgurl=http:...

    and thishttp://image.customrodder.com/f/tech/903...

if you see that on your tranny, dont bother with the park neutral sitch, replace this one instead. To test my theory all you have to do is unjack it and drive your vehicle,, you'll see the difference.

Yes it is the clutch slipping, in high gear the greatest load is put on the clutch so that is when they slip the most.

When driving at about 30 mph occasionally the drive seems to slip and then catch. car is 2005 1.6 fsi with 80k on clock

the gearbox is a computer controlled auto with 4th lock up (O/D) and should, if driven very carefully, change from fluid drive to mechanical drive at about 30 mph.to check transmision carry out the following.
from standstill,put car in drive,no gas,and let the car reach max speed(about 30 ish)then.
from standstill using 1/3 gas pedal (do not move gas foot)let the car accelerate to max speed.
lastly, put car in drive and floor gas pedal(make sure you are alone)then
drive as economically as you can, the gearshift patern will then adjust to your driving style(takes about 50 miles)You will feel the car go from fluid to mechanical drive as a kind of slight drop in revs then ...engage.
assuming you have checked fluid level first of course....

My automatic transmission slips when shifting from

Either the fluid is low or you have a clogged trany filter or are starting to loose your transmition. If it is just low on fliud you will ruin your trany if you keep driving it with this condition.Check your fluid level with the engine running and if it is low fill it to the full line and test drive.

1990 Riviera Shop installed wrong transmission? no overdrive

sounds like they replaced your tranny with a 3 speed one. while it's not going to hurt anything, you won't have over drive and get better gas milage as you would with overdrive.but there should not be any looseness in your shifter. they should fix that right away. slipping out of gear can be very dangerous. as for the rest, it sounds like they did very shoddy work to say the least.

Have the vehicle scanned for diagnostic trouble codes, and repair any codes.More than likely the trans needs a rebuild. If the fluid smelled burnt, then obviously clutches or bands are burnt inside the trans.Changing the fluid just got rid of the smell, whatever is burnt is still hurnt. It is best to stop driving the vehicle,as continuing to drive it will just cause more damage to whatever is damaged. Those transmissions are prone to pump problems too.
