Question about 2003 Suzuki Aerio

Open Question

PO171 Bank1 system lean, check engine is on, mechanic found mass air flow sensor has intermittent failure. Car just dies sometimes when driving along. Also has a cough like jerking sometimes. Can be dangerous when car just dies in traffic. Has 109,000 miles. Mechanic says to replace part #1396 for $1459. Should I get a second opinion or is it time to trade this car before it falls completely apart. Has been good car up til now. I'm pretty fond of it but have to be practical. Nearest Suzuki dealer is 120 miles away. Help.

SOURCE: Mass Air Flow Sensor

If you clear the codes and the MAF code is generated again, AND the connector is OK to the MAF, then replace the MAF. Also, be sure your air filter is ok and the air horn (air flow tubing) from the air filter housing to the throttle body is securely connected and has no cracks in the rubber. If ok, replace the MAF sensor.

What does code mean? po171

Lean mixture detected at oxygen sensor (bank1) Remove mass air flow sensor (MAF) and spray clean with electrical or tuner cleaner. Most times that's all it takes.

My engine light light is on i took the car to O`REILLY the scan the car and the code is PO171,i just want to know was is that code for

p0171 is system to lean ( bank 1 ). one of the most common causes for a p0171 is a dirty mass air flow sensor ( MAF ). just clean or replace maf sensor. use maf sensor cleaner found at most auto parts stores. do not use any other cleaner. disconnect air tube just ahead of sensor, and then spray the cleaner through the screen at the wire element on the maf sensor, let cleaner soak in for several minutes. then give it another shot of cleaner. let it set another 5 minutes. then reconnect air tube and start engine. or you can follow directions on back of maf spray can. if the lean code comes back, you may have to replace maf sensor. unless you have a vacuum leak. Ford p0171 AND p0174 lean codes can also be set by a bad EGR differential pressure sensor. These sensors have a very high failure rate once a vehicle has more than about 60,000 miles on the odometer or is more than five or six years old. hope this helps !

2002 vw passat....starts fine and drives fine....periodically stalls when braking for stop..this happens after a few miles of driving and is hard to get going again but will start and if reved up a bit I...

It appears that your brake booster system has a major vacuum leak which is causing the engine to go lean and stall. Check the hose between the intake manifold and the brake booster. It may be cracked or loose causing outside air to enter the hose when the brake is applied.

CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON P0171 FUEL TRIM BANK1 SYSTEM TO LEAN.

Hi. You need to clean the Mass Air Flow Sensor.
This is an easy job.
Get a can of throttle body or brake cleaner spray at your local auto parts store.

Open the hood, and locate the air filter box. follow the tube from the filter box towards the engine. Look for a small black box with 2 screws holding it to the air tube, Remove the wire connector and observe inside the sensor with a flashlight. You will see 2 small wires, and they will appear fuzzy or dirty. Spray the interior with the cleaner until the wires are nice and clean. Do not use compressed air, you will damage the sensor. Put it all back together and drive it.
This will def fix your issue. This is a vey common problem. If you do it yourself, you will save 70 + bucks.

Thanks for choosing FixYa, and a FIxYa rating for my assistance would be greatly appreciated.
