2002 pontiac grand prix wont go into overdrive. Shifts fine in the other gears and not codes are coming up.

as you face the engine the thermostat bell is on the right (drivers side) Follow the radiatoe hose. Remove the two bolts and raise the bell still attatched to the hose. the thermostat is there with the rubber seal. You can gently pry the thermostat out with a screwdriver or something similar. Put in new thermostat be sure it is the same as the old one, and then replace or change the seal (be sure it is the smae size and thickness as the old one as I got the wrong size from Napa) Then replace the bell, and tighten, but not over tighten. Basic Troubleshooting:

Although the Indicator says the vehicle is in "D" or "OD", is it really? If the linkage is mechanical, you may actually be in "3". Make sure the car is in neutral and pull the lever into the first forward position without looking at the indicator.

Does your vehicle have a switch to turn the OD off and you didn't know it? You may have inadvertently done this. In this case, though, usually there is a little dummy light on the dash that says "O/D off" or something like that.

Check the transmission fluid level on your vehicle and make sure it is to factory specification.

My daughter has a 2003 with the same problem. She took it to a highly regarded transmission shop. They told her it is not the transmisison but an engine performance problem. She took it for an oil change to check the filters etc and the fuel filter is bad. I will follow up if that fixes the problem.

A code “multiple misfire” may mean that one or more of the following has happened:

•Faulty spark plugs or wires
•Faulty coil (pack)
•Faulty oxygen sensor(s)
•Faulty fuel injector(s)
•Burned exhaust valve
•Faulty catalytic converter(s)
•Stuck/blocked EGR valve / passages
•Faulty camshaft position sensor
•Defective computer

If there are symptoms such as the engine is stumbling or hesitating, check all wiring and connectors that lead to the cylinders (i.e. spark plugs). Depending on how long the ignition components have been in the car, it may be a good idea to replace them as part of your regular maintenance schedule. I would suggest spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor (if applicable). Otherwise, check the coils (a.k.a. coil packs). In some cases, the catalytic converter has gone bad. If you smell rotten eggs in the exhaust, your cat converter needs to be replaced. I've also heard in other cases the problems were faulty fuel injectors.

Random misfires that jump around from one cylinder to another (read: P030x codes) also will set a P0300 code. The underlying cause is often a lean fuel condition, which may be due to a vacuum leak in the intake manifold or unmetered air getting past the airflow sensor, or an EGR valve that is stuck open.

DTC P0641 The powertrain control module (PCM) provides a 5-volt reference to the following sensors:

The throttle position (TP) sensor 1
The accelerator pedal position (APP) sensor 2
The engine cooling fan speed sensor
The AC pressure sensor
The fuel tank pressure (FTP) sensor
The oil pressure sensor (OPS)
The PCM monitors voltage on the 5-volt reference circuit. If the voltage is higher or lower than required, DTC P0641 will set.

Conditions for Setting the DTC
The PCM detects a voltage that is higher or lower than required on the 5-volt reference circuit. The above condition is present for 1 second. Action Taken When the DTC Sets The control module illuminates the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) when the diagnostic runs and fails. The control module records the operating conditions at the time the diagnostic fails. The control module stores this information in the Freeze Frame/Failure Records.
Conditions for Clearing the MIL/DTC The control module turns OFF the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) after 3 consecutive ignition cycles that the diagnostic runs and does not fail. A current DTC, Last Test Failed, clears when the diagnostic runs and passes. A history DTC clears after 40 consecutive warm-up cycles, if no failures are reported by this or any other emission related diagnostic. Clear the MIL and the DTC with a scan tool.

Yes i can be dangerous, depending which issues mentioned above has triggered the code such as a faulty gas peddle position sensor. the code can also cause a reduced engine power to activate.

Thank you for using Fixya and best advice is to have the dealer address these issues. A tech 2 scanner would be needed to address the P0641 DTC code.

06 pontiac grand prix shifting hard off a dead stop


If all gears are shifting hard, may have a code p1811 set-trans adapt long shift. When this code sets it commands full line pressure causing hard shifts. Usually the pressure control solenoid is at fault. You need to have it scanned for codes.

The abs light and the trac light come on at the same time. right after I take off. the rpm is way high when it shifts and does not shift into overdrive.


I literally just had this problem solved. The cars computer was giving a code for bad intake or something like that and I just cleared the code, its running beautifully now!

I have a 2000 Grand Prix 3.8
the transmission shifts fine till it gets hot then it starts shifting hard into gears can anyone tell me what might be causing this.

some of the trannys has straps in them that sometimes needs to be tightened and that could be the cause of it

2000 Grand Prix does not shift into overdrive.


Could be a solenoid, there are solenoids accessible thru the bottom pan that control shifting functions. Do you have a check engine light on? If so An OBD2 scanner can tell you what code was set.

1999 transmission


the 4th gear clutch shaft has very fine teeth that wear over time, if vehicle has high miles, this shaft may have failed, a sprag may have failed, the 4th gear selenoid may be bad, the 4th gear clutches could be fried, the valve body may be leaking / venting clutch apply pressure, the range selector may be off causing the VCM to believe you are in 3rd.
