First check your coolant levels frequently.. if you are adding coolant/water frequently.. you have a leak.

A water pump can fail a couple ways. Bearing, seal, impeller or all of those.. if a bearing.. usually starts making noise or is hard to turn etc.. impellers can crack break or chip causing the pump to become out of balance and lose efficiency. Only a broken gasket or shaft seal will result in a leak.. a small one and if the leak drips on the exhaust or some other hot part of the motor.. it will evaporate. Again.. it doesn't have to leak to fail..

A bad heater core typically will leak inside the vehicle.. or mist the windshield with a thin film of guk..even blow whites smoke out the vents.. usually you can smell a sweetish odor.. and will find the carpet damp on the tranny hump or passenger side... in some cases even a puddle.

White smoke from under the hood.. my guess is the mechanic did a pressure test.. checked the water pump and found the pump was on it's way out.. and possibly the inlet or outlet on the heater core is cracked or breaking..leaking onto the exhaust manifold.. they usually fail at the seam.

The problem is not connected.. but like many service checks or problem solving .. upon inspection other things are found that need attention. It would be a good idea if you proceed with this service to have all hoses checked and replace as needed.. drive belt too.. a good flush and have the coolant renewed if needed.

Best of luck

When you say "sometimes", whad do you mean exactly? When cold? When warm? When accellerating?
White exhaust smoke (which has a sweet smell) is often an indication of a blown head gasket. You'll need a compression test or test the antifreeze against exhaust gas contamination. Although the compression test will tell you more about the contition of the head gasket.
Where exactly does the white smoke come from under the hood? Maybe there's a puncture somewhere on the radiator hose or heater hose and the antifreeze sprays on the exhaust? Please check. There still is a tiny bit of hope it's not the gasket...

White smoke but not over heating

you could have a pin hole in the rubber pipes. or gasket blown. as for cold air that can be a blocked internal rad for the heater or the switching for the diverted is not working. if you losing a lot of water or just a bit it will give off white smoke also known as steam. check were it is coming from get engine up to running temp and wiggle pipes about faveret place for a pipe to go is the top rad pipe.

White smoke from under the hood of a 1999 cadillac deville with northstar what could it be

it sounds to me like the car is in need of a mojor flush and possible fan swith temp module. that could cause the radiator cap to over pressurize and shoot water out . can you give any more details? does it cool back off when you drive?

My 94 acura legend blows blue smoke but not all the time why? also iam loseing water under the car and i think its the water pump how do you change that and will that make it smoke at times? Dave

The water pump won'tcause blue smoke. If it's coming out of the tail pipe, and then going away as the engine heats up, that's because your catalytic converter is doing away with the smoke, once it kicks in. That won't last forever, as your cat will plug up from this. Oull the spark plugs, and see if you have evidence of oil burning, not oil fouling. Fram / autolite gives nice diagnostic pictures in their master cataloge. Most parts stores will have a copy. As far as the water pump, need engine size.

91 gti 8valve overheating problem blows coolent smoke on the..

I'm not familiar with your model to know if you have an engine temp guage or a light that would come on if the engine is overheated. You said the motor wasn't overheating under the hood... but you have an overheating problem? Maybe just a tad bit more info...
Are you losing coolant?
The water pump if bad, would probably leak or make terrible racket.
Just to take a shot at it, since you said it blows smoke through the dash... I'm assuming a kindof white smoke with a rather sweet smell? Have you noticed any wetness on the passenger floor at all? If yes to any of this, I would suspect as you mentioned, a leaking heater core. Hope this helps... Good luck!
