Question about Dodge Avenger

2 Answers

I was given a 1998 dodge avenger, and it seems to have transmission problems, it makes a loud whistling noise when being driven. Its shifts fine at times and sometimes, you have to accelerate to get it to go in gear. I look in the glove compartment and found a diagnostic paper, but don't understand it. this is what it says. transmission control module scan, p1776 solenoid switch valve position, p1768 relay output always off, po740 tcc circuit.. can someone tell me what it means and what should i do

Hi there riverstarif. I am sorry to hear about your transmission troubles. The first two codes basically refer to solenoids in the transmission that control shifting and the last one po740, means that the tourque converter lockup is not working correctly. These are all pretty bad A/T problems, do not let them get worse because the cost to repair will get higher. If you dont know how to work on A/T systems i suggest you take it into a shop. Sine the car still runs and drives it wont cost as much if it were immobile. I hope that this helps you out. Rate the solution if this sheds some light on the situation for you :)

Have a good day.

HI there, you should be looking anywhere from $1000-$1500. Any more than that and they may be replacing things that dont need work. All it needs is 2 solenoid's and the tourque converter to be repaired or replaced. thats whay there is the $500 diff. in cost. The Avenger has the 44RE tranny. My 99' Dodge Ram with the 46RE got a complete rebuild and upgrade to the 47RE internals for $2700. That price was for just about everything inside the tranny. Like said above, just to have them repair the damage shouldnt be too bad. Unfortuanately the 44RE and 46RE tranny's are kind of junky but once they get fixed they will be fine because most A/T shops will not fix them with OEM dodge parts. They will use better aftermarket parts to fix them so they dont fail again. I hope this helps. Not much more anyone can do to help without coming to your house to fix it for you. :) Do some shopping arround, with this info you can find a good shop without getting ripped off. :)

1998 land rover discovery transmission makes loud banging noise when shifting from pari to drive?

Tons of possibilities here (transmission, differential, motor mounts, transmission mounts....), so I'll ask some debug questions to help narrow it down. Does it make the noise when shifting into reverse? Also, does it make the noise only when shifting from park, or also when shifting from neutral (into drive or into reverse)? Did the noise start as an occasional, softer noise and get worse over time, or did it start suddenly? Does the vehicle lurch at the same time as the noise? What happens when you go from Reverse to Drive, or vice versa? Has any work been done recently (brakes, tires, alignment, suspension, transmission)?

My 1998 dodge avenger automatic will not shift out of second what will cause this the computer i hooked it up to just gave me these codes po733, po700, po734 the motor is a 2.5

code po700 is what the pcm gets from the tcm when there is a problem with the transmission-anywhere from fluid level, sensor, solenoid, tcm problem, or mechanical problem.
the situation you have with the car being in 2nd gear is called "limp-in" mode. so you can limp-in to a repair center.

98 dodge avenger transmission problem

codes will verify if it needs to be pulled out. More than likely it will as the electronics are rarely the problem. The computer senses a indifference in the ratio between the sensors so it locks it in limp mode - 2nd gear.
