Question about 2003 Buick Rendezvous

1 Answer

2003 buick rendezvous has serious transmission shifting problems. I have changed fluid and filter twice in last 9 months. It happens worse at LOW RPMS. Between 2&3 and 3&4. My guess is it may be the shift pressure valves or the shift solenoid. Can a DIY fix this. Help

fwd and from what I have seen on the internet I have 4T65E/M15

As per bulletin above that you sent, it appears that my best shot is to replace the spacer plate(48).

I have looked both diagrams over and cannot find a spacer plate or orifice #29. I can't find anything with a # 48 or 29. It also talked about shift valve #368 which I found on the diagram, but it looks as if the transmission has to come out, which I'm not good enough to pull a tranny. I am barely good enough to pull the pan, and replace things in there. Help me find #48 spacer plate.

Here is a bulletin I located about what seems to be the issue you are describing. As far as DIY goes it really depends on how comfortable you are to disassemble parts of your transmission.

Some dealership technicians may have difficulty diagnosing DTC P0756, 2-3 Shift Valve Performance on 4L60-E, 4L65-E or 4L70-E automatic transmissions. As detailed in the Service Manual, when the PCM detects a 4-3-3-4 shift pattern, DTC P0756 will set. Some customers may also describe a condition of a second, third or fourth gear start that may have the same causes but has not set this DTC yet. Below are some tips when diagnosing this DTC:
• This is a performance code. This means that a mechanical malfunction exists. • This code is not set by electrical issues such as a damaged wiring harness or poor electrical connections. Electrical problems would cause a DTC P0758, P0787 or P0788 to set. • The most likely cause is chips/debris plugging the filtered AFL oil at orifice #29 on the top of the spacer plate (48). This is a very small hole and is easily plugged by a small amount of debris. It is important to remove the spacer plate and inspect orifice #29 and the immediate area for the presence of chips/debris. Also, the transmission case passage directly above this orifice and the valve body passage directly below should be inspected and cleaned of any chips/debris. For 2003 and newer vehicles the spacer plate should be replaced. The service replacement spacer plate is a bonded style with gaskets and solenoid filter screens bonded to the spacer plate. These screens can help to prevent plugging of orifice #29 caused by small debris or chips. • This code could be set if the 2-3 shift valve (368) were stuck or hung-up in its bore. Inspect the 2-3 shift valve (368) and the 2-3 shuttle valve (369) for free movement or damage and clean the valves, the bore and the valve body passages. • This code could be set by a 2-3 shift solenoid (367b) if it were cracked, broken or leaking. Refer to Shift Solenoid Leak Test in the appropriate Service Manual for the leak test procedure. Based on parts return findings, a damaged or leaking shift solenoid is the least likely cause of this condition. Simply replacing a shift solenoid will not correct this condition unless the solenoid has been found to be cracked, broken or leaking.

I currently am searching for an exploded view of your transmssion but will need to know if it is awd or fwd and if possible which transmission it is of three 4L60-E, 4L65-E or 4L70-E

Check engine light on? If so, you need to scan the transmission control module for any codes that may be causing this problem. You may have a defective solenoid etc. inside the tranny. You can also try disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it to see if it may correct the problem

Have you checked the transmission fluid level? If it is full I would take it to a transmission shop as there may be a serious problem.

1998 toyota celica ttransmission when cold shifts ok. After warming shifts like over drive goes on and off and looses reverse

When a transmission is hot is usually when the problems are noticed. Is the fluid level low? Is it brown or black in color? Does it smell burnt? These are all indications of a problem - some worse than others. If topping off to the correct level, you may have more serious issues. You might want to have the fluid / filter serviced or changed if it has been a while - but a well neglected transmission will not likely come back to life by doing the fluid and filter service. Good luck!

IF your transmission is truly slipping then changing the fluid is not going to help. It won't hurt but it won't help. I am wondering, are you sure the transmission is slipping. It will have a check engine light on and a trouble code if it is slipping.

Have 2003 Buick Rendezvous cx, has 175,000 kilometers, the transmission seems to have a slip when you go from reverse to drive, but only once in awhile, what could this be.

Have you ever had the transmission fluid changed? If not, it COULD be the problem. Don't take it to one of those Fluid Flush places. They don't change the filter and just pump out some of the old fluid. Go to a place that drops the pan and changes the filter.
I also use SEAFOAM transmission conditioner shortly BEFORE I change the fluid. O'Reilly's sells it.
Good Luck.

1998 Olds Intrigue. When putting the vehicle in drive it does not get in gear. It's like being in neutral, but if I put it in 1st or 2nd low gear will drive...then im able to shift up back into drive and...

Check your fluid level to make sure it is at the proper level. When you put the selector in 1st or 2nd manually you are taking the auto clutch out of the equation which is why it will work somewhat when the fluid is low. Operating the vehicle with low fluid will damage your transmission. If the fluid is at the proper level and it is still not functioning correctly, get a Real Fluid and Filter Change. DO NOT ALLOW THEM TO USE THAT STUPID RECYLCING MACHINE EVERYONE WANTS TO USE. If that has been done in the last 6 months I know exactly where the problem is and your not going to like it. If you have had the trans fluid changed and they used that machine instead of the actually removing teh fluid and replacing the filter, when that machine cycled it destroyed your filter and moved all the crude back into the transmission damaging it which will require a rebuild. Your vehicle was made before the newer Screen filters came into use. That Recycle machine works by back flushing the fluid through the transmission and will destroy the filter used in your transmission and your transmission. Something they don't tell you about those machines because most don't understand them. Lastly, if the Fluid was good and you do a Filter/fluid change and it is still not working correctly you will need to take it to a Trans shop and have it repaired. There a several solenoids inside the transmission that do the shifting for you. When you shift down you override those but, if the First one doesn't work it will give you the condition you have described. You should know that this condition will get worse over time to the point that even shifting down as you are now to get it working will not work, if the problem is internal transmission problem.

Hard down shifts

Check the transmission fluid level, see if there is any foaming in the fluid which is bad, and condition, If the fluid is low the transmission fluid pressure could be low and if the transmission fluid filter is dirty, that could also be restricted the fluid flow.
The transmission fluid should be bright red like strawberry in colour, if it's dark like burgundy then it's time to change the transmission oil and filter. The hard down shifting could be a servo that is sticking caused by dirt in the fluid, have a Transmission shop service the transmission and scan the car's ECM for any codes that may be causing your shifting problem.
Good luck and hope this helps.

This is a common problem on some GM cars. There is a pressure control valve in the side cover of the transmission that needs to be replaced. The transmission does not have to be rebuilt. You will need to get a side cover gasket also.
